do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions ... while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front of the store.”

Thought this was an interesting quote. Either it says a lot about our priorities or proves how truly powerful the drug pushing tobacco companies really are.

Either way ... I think it's pretty pathetic.

You?

Lookatyou ... Yes ... there is a reasonable explanation. It's called the mega rich tobacco companies can PAY to have their legal drugs put where everyone can see them ... including young children.

While I can understand the marketing ploy and agree with some of you ... the part I left out is that a friend of mine is an attorney. A high power attorney who is fighting the tobacco industry. As much as you may want to blame marketing I can tell you that many stores (especially here in Cali) have tried to move the placement of cigarettes but have been "threatened, forced, and cajoled" into keeping them where children can see them. There are plenty of other "impulse buy" items they could replace them with. My friend has had his life threatened, his car trashed and tires flattened. Still he refuses to give upbecaues he has small children. The tobacco companies are one of THE most powerful entities in the US and will remain that way until we chose to stop them for causing harm.

** i'm bukking ... BLOCK AWAY sweet thang. No disappointment here. Made my day, honestly. I can tell after reading your rude and ignorant comment you're no one I'd want to know anyway ~ least of all communicate with. I have plenty of wonderful contacts and friends here ... and they're way above your league.

The idea here is completely missed. The strategy used by the drug store is simple. Drugs are the anchor of the store. The profit marginal at best. People have to have them therefore they will walk to get them. Making everything in their path a potential sale for the store. The cigarette buyers will go to a convenience store before they would walk to the back of the store, thus making the merchandise in the middle a non impulse sale only. It is simply marketing. As much as we should hate the tobacco companies, in this case, we must see selling and merchandising as the reason for the store's set up.

It's called 'impulse buying', and it's the same reason that the vegetables are in the rear, and the chocolate, gum, and magazines are at the checkouts. When you're in line at the counter, you are far more likeley to buy a "luxury" item than if you had to seek it out on a shelf. It is also a security issue; a potential drug thief would have to make it through the whole shop to the rear, and all the way back out again.

whereas what you say is TRUE, notice that the most highly demanded grocery--MILK--is all the way at the BACK of every grocery store while cigarettes and candy are sold up front. There is a marketing logic to this: in order for you to get milk, they want you to walk by shelves and more shelves of other stuff with a much higher profit margin. And since walking a lot makes you hungry---well, you figured it out already.

You make me laugh. Maybe they sell the cigarettes at the front, so the cigarette smelling people don't stink up the whole way back to the prescription counter.
Than again, eventually the cigarette buyers, may have to go back to the prescription counter as well to pick up their inhalers.

I am absolutely appalled that the US sells cigarettes at the same place you buy medicine ... that is SICK!

Where it is in the store is completely irrelevant.

Now that I think about it, I do think it is quite pathetic...
Lol, they only do that because the truely sick people are the smokers, and they'd run outta breath if you put the smokes at the back of the store. ;)

Lol, if that makes ANY sense to you.

i have blocked you because that is absurd....do you realize that when a old man goes the doc for a headache he leaves with 56 prescriptions he doesn't need? i think the pharmaceutical business far surpasses the cig one and they do it in the back so they can take advantage of the elderly.....
