I have a B.A majored in psychology, minor in sociology. I'm really interested though in investigative/under cover/criminal justice, like "reading" criminals. I was thinking I could split my day being a couseling psychologist, then spend the other day doing investigative work. but i've never heard of an investigative psychologist. SOmeone help! What is it I'm trying to say that I want to be? I don't know all career titles, so I made up Investigative Psychologist yesterday while in church. :) T.I.A!

It is a criminal Profiler, and they are also called Forensic Psychologists.
What they do is they study the clues left by the murderer and determine what type of person would be most likely to commit that type of murder, and what their motivation was. They can also accurately predict if the killer will strike again.

For additional information, you can look up these criminal profilers:
Robert K. Ressler
Dayle Hinman
John Doughlas

I have a friend who is doing her PhD internship in psychology. Her career goal is to become a Forensic Psychologist.

So the main thing is you are going to need a PhD in Psychology or a PsychD, then you can become licensed, and start focusing on the Forensic part.

It's a long haul - most of the folks (but not all) in the intern program are well into their 30s and have not completed their doctorate, let alone their post doc hours they will need to qualify for licensure.

I think they are more commonly called profilers. They help the police find criminals by looking at crime scenes, murder victims, and other evidence and get into the criminal's mind then tell the police what sort of person would commit these crimes, why they do it, and what they might do next.

INVESTIGATIVE PSYCHOLOGIST IS FINE.

YOU COULD DO A CONTRACT WITH THE DEPARTMENT TO ASSIST IN INVESTIGATIONS AND BUILDING A PROFILE OF WHAT MAKES UP THIS TYPE OF PERSONALITY? (THUS PROFILER)

COULD BE VERY LUCRATIVE AND YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHANGE CAREER FIELDS OR LOOK AT IT AS A SUPPLEMENTAL INCOME WHEN YOU RETIREMENT DAYS COME?

By reading, do you mean profiling criminals? If so, that's forensic psychology.
