The God gene hypothesis states that some human beings bear a gene which gives them a predisposition to episodes interpreted by some as religious revelation. The idea has been postulated and promoted by geneticist Dr. Dean Hamer, the director of the Gene Structure and Regulation Unit at the U.S. National Cancer Institute.
Is it real? If so, is religion like a disease that can be cured? Should it be? I think we have to face the very real possibility that people may some day be able to genetically dictate the religiosity of their children. I'm not sure that's a good thing!

It makes common sense that our primitive barbarian ancestors evolved this gene as a mechanism of survival in fearfully unknown universe. But as modern man begins to use the more recently developed cerebral cortex, the so-called god gene is no longer needed.
Unfortunately, obsolete genes do not die overnight, so we'll be seeing the majority of the earth's population with a distorted worldview for some time to come.

not necessarily a god gene-it is a gene that more people have in common if they are as a rule spiritual in some way-but the two might not be connected at all-remember not all will fit that pattern-but it was a good study and did raise some very interesting facts--smile and enjoy the night

Didn't know about that. Interesting. So believers are going to be believers because of a gene as much as alcoholics are that way because of a gene?

Yes, I knew that. Did you also know there is an alcoholism gene but that doctors/scientists cannot remove it because too much other important stuff is attached to it?
weird, huh?

Yeah.. isn't it called schizophrenia? You know hearing voices, speaking in tongues, acting illogical and delusional... I'm pretty sure it's a mental illness and not a "God gene"... Or maybe it's the Gullible gene...hmmm
