PLEASE READ THIS B4 eating frozen food in a can!
Are canned goods that have frozen inside the jar safe to eat?
~~~~*~~~~
With cold weather upon us--and more to come--we thought it was time to review what should be done if canned foods freeze:
If home or commercially canned foods freeze, they are still safe to eat IF the seal (or seam of the can) is not broken.
When commercially canned foods freeze, the food inside expands and the can may bulge or even burst. Throw cans in this condi- tion away, without tasting (don't even give it to your dog).
Even if the can is not bulging, there may be microscopic openings in the seams due to stress.
Thaw frozen canned goods slowly; a refrigerator is an ideal place to thaw such foods. Commercially canned foods can be placed on a tray or plate to check for leakage from the seams that may not be apparent. If any leakage occurs, discard the food.
Use canned goods that have frozen as soon as possible (providing seals and seams are not leaking) as quality will deteriorate quickly.
Starchy foods may curdle (separate) when frozen -- thawing and heating should correct this problem.
As an added precaution, boil all low acid foods 10 to 20 minutes. depending on the food, before tasting.
If produce canned at home was processed in jars made for freezing as well as canning, the frozen jar may be placed directly in the freezer and kept there until used. Keep in mind that quality, especially texture, will be affected. Therefore, this food should be used as soon as possible.
Any food that looks or smells bad should be discarded so that humans and animals cannot eat it.
To prevent loss of food, home and commercially canned goods should be stored in an area where they will not freeze. While an unheated porch or garage might be acceptable during a normal winter, these areas will not offer enough protection from freezing during the sub-zero temperatures. If jars must be stored where they may freeze, wrap them in newspapers, place them in boxes and cover them with more newspapers and heavy blankets.
It used to be thought that crunchy food was better for keeping their teeth clean, but that has since been proven incorrect. It really doesn't matter which kind you feed, but it's more important to give him a high quality food, which may be expensive. Also, a sudden switch from whatever he was eating before could upset his stomach, so you should make the change slowly-- mix a small amount of the new food in with a lot of the old, and gradually change the proportions over a couple of weeks until he's eating the new stuff. Canned food, being wetter, could cause his stools to be looser, which is a mess if he's not housebroken. Dry food is not necessarily an more natural than canned. You might want to ask your vet what he or she recommends.
If the seams are still good the only problem ( a big problem) is that the food will be mushy or of poor texture from the slow growing ice crystals that will grow in the water that is in the food which break the cell walls and ruin the natural texture. Food safety is not an issue if those seals are OK.
Canning food is a good way of storing it for long periods of time, although most tinned vegetables and fruit have lower vitamin contents compared with fresh or frozen varieties.
Freezing does little harm to most vegetables and because they are usually frozen immediately after picking their vitamin and mineral content is often higher that fresh produce bought from your local greengrocer or supermarket.
I don't quite understand the exact question however, I doubt I'd use a canned food item if it had been frozen. You can open the can and see what the contents look like and most importantly ... smell like.
