The $499 PS3 is a new 40GB system.

It'll stay at that prise at all time from now on.

NOTE: the 40GB PS3 has less features and hardware. e.g. no backwards compatibility. less USB ports etc.

All price changes for the Playstation 3 are permanent. If you don't get one now, the price will be the same. Actually, it might even be lower if you choose to wait.

Sony has not made things easy for costumers by offering several different models and adding new ones relatively often.

There are a total of 4 versions of the PS3. They released two (20GB and 60GB) when they launched, but those are being phased out for th new models (40GB and 80GB).

20GB ($380) - Still available, but soon to be out of stock:

60GB ($500) - Another that won't be around long:

40GB ($400) - This will start selling Nov. 2:

80GB ($500) - This is the one most places sell:

Here is a useful chart to compare the features (though they are basically all the same).

There are some things you should take into account. The 60GB and the 20GB are able to play every PS2 game. The 80GB can play a lot of PS2 games. And the 40GB can play no PS2 games. (All models can play most PS1 games).

Also, there are some deals you should be aware of. Right now, when you buy any Blu Ray player (including the PS3) you get five free Blu Ray movies.

Also, the 40GB PS3 model comes with a free copy of Spiderman 3 Blu Ray movie (on top of the other five movies). The 80GB doesn't come with Spiderman, but it does come with the (really good) PS3 game Motorstorm.

I hope that helps clear things up a bit.

It's a permanent thing. The 80 gb is now 499.99 with Motorstorm. The 60 gb is still 499.99. Sony can do it because the Blu-ray parts have gotten cheaper the past few months.

The 1st who answer the question is not correct. The new PS3 with the 40GB is $399.99. Not $499.99.

Bestbuy employee.

I would never purchase a ps3. They're overpriced. I do have one but I didn't pay for it. I got it from the freebie site on my page. :]

I think, this is permanent, otherwise other consoles will win war.
Here's the 399$ 40GB console:
