This pewter plate records the earliest photographic image, taken in 1826 by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce from a third-floor window. The picture shows the lines of a roof and outbuildings.
Since Mr. Washington died in 1799 the only logical explanation is that any photographs of him were taken off of a portait that had been painted.
