Do they normally go out and buy a cd or are you expected/allowed to provide it?

I suggest asking the DJ. Usually, if the DJ is running on a CD system, you can just lend him a copy. The kicker with this is, some DJs run by a strict copyright policy and wont play burned CDs. if your DJ runs on a computer based system, it shouldnt be too much of a problem for him to download it for you.

My brother is the bar manager at a club, so i have a lot of contact with DJs... they are usually very nice when it comes to things like this (This is not the OK to take your CD case to the club and bug the DJ)

My parents were wedding DJ's. If someone wanted a song they did not have, they went out and bought it.

Although it might depend on the DJ.

But in these digital times... a lot of DJ's use MP3's and probably just download the song.

My parents DJ'ed in a time where they had to go buy the WHOLE CD for one song.

If you want a certain song, make sure you give them a copy of it. Otherwise, you run the risk that they won't have it, or will get the wrong version, or will misunderstand you. Once you get to the wedding it will be too late to do anything about it- better safe than sorry. Burning a CD takes about two minutes!

My DJ got songs for us off of iTunes. Our Best Man made a last minute surprise request. (An obscure song we had made up a dance to in high school) Our DJ did not have the song since it was off of a soundtrack but he let the Best Man get it out of his car so he could play it. He did not charge us extra for any of these services.

Ask your DJ. Most of the good ones use digital equipment now and can just download a song off of places like iTunes for a buck a song.

Any DJ who is professional will go and get a song that is especially requested by the bride and groom. Put it in your agreement. If he doesn't ofer to get the song, reconsider your choice of deejay. Remember, YOU are paying HIM. He can afford $10 for a new CD.

Depends on the DJ. Our DJ asked for our song requests a minimum of one week before. He said this way if he didn't have it he would be able to get it by the day of the wedding.

They usually get some semi socail group of people to vote for the best genre of music. Then after that they just mix it up to a random song each time. But i think they will make exceptions if you request a song that is already on their playlist. Does that answer you question.

Just to be safe, you should probably give the CD to them to play so there are no issues. We asked for a song that wasn't in the main list and when he played our first dance it sounded like SH#T.

There are a zillion songs and they always come up and hum or sing some of it. I never minded playing anything they asked for, but you just cannot have them all. If someone bought one I'd play it and thank them. You could run inot a jerk as many are that way or they may have to submit to place what they play. Worse thing is no, but if it makes the night that's no too mluch to risk!
