I am really depressed and I have issues with anxiety and anger, so today I went to the campus health center and filled out the preliminary paperwork so that I can go in when they have a free space.

Their website and brochures say that most people are better within 1 or 2 visits, and that 90% of people are finished in 7. But between the aforementioned problems and my issues with gender identity, assertiveness, and severe homesickness, I really don't think I'd be done in 7.

So, is it weird to go to so many appointments? I feel like I shouldn't even go because I have six different issues and I'd use up too much of the counselors' time. I went to a counselor for almost two years before I moved up here, and while that helped a lot, many of the problems are cyclical and the gender and homesickness are both new. I feel like I went too much back home, and I don't want to monopolize it up here in college either.

Am I weird? Do you have any advice?

Your not weird. I suffer from some of the same problems. The reason these people have become counselors is because they want to help people. People like you and I. I really wouldn't worry about how much time you are taking up, it's what they are there for.

It isn't weird to start looking for some help there.

I, personally, think the issues you're dealing with may be a little beyond the campus health center's expertise; so after a few visits they may recommend you find someone more skilled in your particular issues.

There are self-help books on assertiveness. You may want to stock up on some of those at a library.

Your severe homesickness is actually pretty common and normal. I've read articles about how bad homesickness can get, and there are students who actually drop out of school because of it. That's one you do need to talk to the health center people about.

Don't worry about monopolizing them. They won't let you. They'll just tell you how many visits are ok with them.

I have a question for you.
Who should be at the counseling center, a girl who just broke up with her boyfriend of 8 weeks and is a little sad,
or someone who is suffering from anxiety, depression, anger, gender identity, assertiveness and homesickness?
You are not weird, this is what the counseling center is there for. It doesnt matter if you take 200 sessions, as long as they are helping you.

You will actually be helping them as much as they're helping you. Most of the counselors are grad students in counseling and any issues you have they can help with and you will help prepare them for their lives as counsellors. I know that might not be comforting to you, but I doubt you'll be monopolizing their time, that's why you have one hour time limits. It's also what they're there for.

You are trying to be considerate of others who need to use the counseling services. Put your needs first and take as much time as necessary to work through your problems. Everyone should have such a facility available; we would be a healthier nation if more people sought help.
If they are over-booked they may need to add more counselors.

Go to the campus health center! They will decide whether you need more than 7 visits.
Don't try to outguess them. Let them counsel you & see what needs you have. They might even refer you to a doctor outside of the center. At least give them a try! Good luck to you!

No, it's not weird. some people go to therapy for over 5 years and some people can go for a life time and get better but not heal completely.
