You can't really give a price on something like raising a child. You have to take many things into consideration. Like what kind of lifestyle you have or where you live.

My husband & I have 7 kids. We both work, we live in the city and we only make $60,000. It gets tough at times but our children have everything they need and most things they want.

All the time and money you have to spare, and more if you let it :) Worry less about the monetary cost and more about the time. You'll find the money if you need to, or learn to shop more effectively and make better choices. Breastfeeding is cheaper than formula, cloth nappies are a bit cheaper than disposables, you don't need a change table, you can shop in op shops or thrift shops, playgroup is cheaper than those baby music classes and just as much fun, your baby doesn't need matching sheet sets and the sturdiest cot may not be the most expensive. You don't need to buy lots of soft toys because the baby won't like them, and he/she will be just as happy listening to John Denver as those special baby tapes. You don't need to buy wipes, cotton balls or cut up rags and water will do just fine. There's no need to make a huge fuss out of bub's first birthday and Christmas because they won't remember anyway. Take anything any one offers for free unless it is unsafe or goes against your parenting morals (I've just put a shirt saying "Queen of Tantrums" into the op-shop bag.) Time is more of an issue. You won't get anything done once you have a baby and it's more exhausting to get nothing done than it was back when you did get stuff done. You won't get your housework done, you won't have the brain power to study, you'll feel you've achieved if you have a shower and wash the dishes in the same day.

Really, having a child can be as expensive as you make it. There are all sorts of ways to save money and cut costs, while still giving your child everything they need. I've found the older my children get, the more expensive they become :)

You can buy a cheap crib for less than $100 or you can cosleep.
You can buy expensive formula, or you can breastfeed.
You can use cloth diapers, or prepackaged ones (which I have found to be the biggest cost in raising children)
You can buy clothes at discount stores and second hand shops, or you can shop brand name for everything.. realistically babies don't need much clothing.. Onesies, pajamas, socks, a couple of hats..

You don't need a big fancy swing or stroller, you don't need all the latest gadgets and gizmos.. I'd say before my first daughter was born I spent $200.

It is very expensive especially in the first two years as they grow so much and need so much

I do not think you can put an actual price on raising a child as we all have different approaches to raising our kids

Ie private education .. after school clubs .. disposable or terrys nappies

Picked out a name yet?

Places to find items: Rooms to Grow, Babies R Us, Baby Depot (Burlington Coat Factory), Clothes (Kohl's, JCPenney, Outlet Malls), Wholesale Club, BabyCenter.com

Here are some I could think of:
infant car seat (from $99), 1 or 2 car seat base (from $40), car seat mat ($15)
new crib (from $100 - $400), 3 sheets, a couple of water proof mattress cover (you don't need blankets and bumpers, use a sleep sack).
Sleep positioner ($10), mobile ($30), classical music cd,
Play yard (from $60), feeding chair (safety first recline $30)
safety gates and locks
baby monitor ($10-$90), stroller (combi $99), activity gym (tiny love $60), bouncer seat
For diapers, Pampers Swaddlers for the first month (because of the umbilical cord stump. later, you can switch to Luvs. Luvs is from the same company as Pampers but less expensive). Pampers Sensitive Wipes. Diaper Rash cream (Balmex).
Baby wash (we use Gerbers Grins and giggles)
Baby bottles (i would have preferred glass, but hard to find)
Vicks rectal thermometer, baby nail clipper, Johnson's safety swab, Baby Orajel, infant tylenol (talk to your pediatrician)
Breast Pump (from $25 to $350), I rented mine from the hospital for $50/month for 3 months each. In retrospect, because I have 2 kids, I should've just bought one. The Medela site says to buy a new one. My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow ($35)
diaper pail (from $10. we used champion, but now we use grocery bags for soiled diapers)

You will need a lot of stuff, but you don't need everything on the list. You probably have a baby registry at Babies R Us, they will send you coupons in the mail. You might also want to become members of BJs Wholesale Club or Sam's Club).

Good Luck!

Despite what advertisers would have us believe, babies actually need very little aside. Most expectant parents go *way* overboard buying tons of useless stuff. Babies mostly just need love and attention!

You need a car seat, clothes, and diapers. Just about everything else is optional.
