This is for bed and breakfast. I thought it was just this place, but when I checked 2-3 other places, it was the same.

Is this safe practice?

That is, I call up to ask for a room booking and they ask for credit card number immediately. Would you trust the person on other end of phone?

It is quite normal for them to ask for the information to confirm the reservation.

Yes it's normal. A lot of places do this to confirm and hold your reservation so that if you are a no show they can charge you for that night. Also some places charge a deposit, so make sure you are clear about how they intend to use your card info. Also make sure you check to see what the latest date you can cancel is and if there are any penalties and fees associated.

As long they adhere to the payment card industry (PCI) standards then it's safe. They are not allowed to store any Primay Account Number information in it's entirity for longer than necessary. If they do keep the entire primary account number, it must be on a separate network, and encrypted or truncated.

Yes, I do it all the time, quite safe.

Credit cards are quite safe over the phone and internet especially where you are initiating the transaction.

You should monitor your credit card statement regularly and query any unknown or foreign transactions.

Yes it's regular. Maybe a Green Dot card would work and you could soend the prepaid credit card anytime on the trip.
