I'm awed, but not shocked. History has a way of repeating itself.

We didn't occupy Korea. We didn't occupy Vietnam. Just about every country that ever invaded the middle east eventually got its butt kicked. Our invasion was just another terrible mistake, in a long and growing list of grievous mistakes made by this president and his administration.

Billions of dollars plowed back into the economy? That is another rich joke. The CEOs have rewarded themselves with annual million dollar bonuses. Blackwater, Halliburton, CACI, SAIC, Custer Battles--all these companies are rolling in cash. This federal stimulation of the economy is false--it is based on deficit spending. It is like feeling rich simply because you're dining on caviar every night, while ignoring the debt you're piling on. Reagan did the same thing--built up a massive federal deficit. That is only a temporary economic stimulation, with a serious payback issue to follow. Republicans will blame the mess they have created on the Democrats when they take office. So in that respect, I guess it will be a conservative victory.

I find it quite amusing how conservatives around here where I live deride the liberals. They say, "the liberals cannot handle the mess we conservatives have created." That is probably true--the problems have grown so huge and unmanageable it will be a miracle if anyone can solve them. Another president like Bush could possibly swamp this country. It is questionable whether we can overcome the problems he has created for us. He turned a projected $5 trillion surplus into a $9 trillion deficit. That is gross fiscal irresponsibility, but what can one expect from a spoiled frat boy? His neocon supporters refuse to acknowledge any wrong doing. Bush sits at the right hand of the throne of the Baby Jesus, don't you know? He can do no wrong. This quagmire in Iraq is really all the Democrats fault. If they had more fully supported the war effort, we would not have created Al Queda in Iraq (which wasn't there before we invaded). We would not have accidentally allowed 300 tons of munitions to fall into enemy hands, to be converted into IEDs that have claimed the lives of thousands of our soldiers. We wouldn't have made all those incompetent mistakes. Right?

Suppose Al Gore had been president. Al Queda may not have been able to strike in the first place, considering that Bush ignored the warnings of the Clinton/Gore administration that Usama was determined to strike within the US, possibly by commandeering commercial aircraft and flying them into buildings. And had Usama pulled it off anyway, under a Gore presidency we would not have invaded Iraq, but would have succeed in Afghanistan, turning it into a successful and shining beacon of democracy in the middle east. Instead, we have divided our efforts, allowing Usama to recruit more terrorists all over the world.

What has the Bush response been to this? The State Department has been forbidden to publish its annual report of the incidents of international terror, which have steadily increased since Bush took office. Typical. When Bush fails, he suppresses all evidence he ever tried. What the neocons don't know becomes success.

We've been there for about 4 years, that's how long it took us to win World War 2(upon America's entry, technically 7 otherwise).

The country is already showing signs of improvement, which took YEARS for Germany and Japan to experience, and we will be there forever, because Iraq will become an ally, and is in a good strategic location. Al Quaeda in Iraq has already been severely weakened according to US military commanders, and the Iraqi military is doing quite well on it's own

500 Billion dollars, going back mostly to the US, and the buildup of a soon-to-be stabilized country.

We have gained no oil from this war to the people saying this, that argument died out a few months after we invaded.

Its not really "losing $500 billion." The majority of that money goes back into the US economy because by law all basic military items must be produced in the US by US companies. Things like uniforms, MREs, weapons, body armor, bullets, missiles, ships, tanks, planes and so on (there are some specialized exceptions). So really, a war is a way to dump billions into US industry and the economy in general...

Obviously not all that money reaches the American worker but a great deal does. Take a look at what WWII did for the Great Depression.

Enjoy the shock and awe while it last because soon, we will be shocked and awed when China starts collecting back the hundreds of billions of dollars that the US owed them.

I knew the war would end up like this. But the war supporters wouldn't listen to me. Now I can say "I told them so". Yes I will rub it in.

Actually I think we should stay in Iraq for the next 50 years. You are so worried about Iraq. Maybe your shock and awe should be pointed at the stupid expensive health care ideas we don't need.

You clearly have no idea of what war is.

Ever served a day in our service?

Your type sicken me. Wars cost money. Do you want to supply our troops with the equipment they deserve?

Just sit back and enjoy the freedoms others braver than you protect.

When were you in Iraq? If you haven't been there, how can you honestly say whether we're "winning" or "losing"? We still have military bases in Japan and Germany.
