1. College Degree.
2. Look every police officer or person in the eye.
3. Never assume. The first advice given to me was to look
everyone in the eye and to never make an A S S U M E.
4. Never stop learning. Read, read, read.
5. Treat every other officer with the highest respect - never think the rookie knows more than the veteran police officer.
6. Treat the women in the office with dignity and respect - they control much more than you think.

Change all your habits and live your life like an angel. Start writing down every address and job you have ever had in your life. Go get a ten year driving record report. Remember if you have ever had contact for whatever reason with the police. Get a list of people that you have ever lived with ever family. Look for your diploma or GED transcripts. Work out the academy is hard on the body. Go to a CB shop and get a copy of the book that has all of your states 10 codes and study the ones for the department that you chose so you have a jump on them before hand. Go on a couple of ride along with different departments to see which one you want to work for. Test for more than one department you can always do a lateral transfer after your probation period is up to the department that you really want to work for.

don't commit any crimes; keep a good driving record.

don't use/sell drugs (you might have to take a polygraph where you will be asked about drug usage; purchases; sales)

keep good company; don't hang with people you might have to arrest one day.

keep a good credit score (you could be tempted to accept payoffs if you have financial problems)

find a mentor in the law enforcement field and follow his advice (it might help you get a job at this department or he can put in a good word for your somewhere)

ask your local law enforcement if you can "ride along" with an experienced officer. Most departments will allow it, if you sign a waiver. this will help you get familiar with other cops and get your foot in the door.

go to the shooting range and practice, practice, practice. find out what type of weapon the police in your area are issued and buy that type of firearm.

stay in good physical condition.

pay close attention to or take an on line course in report writing. most cops are not the best report writers. keep in mind that your report is an imperative piece of the case and a lot of people will see what you've written. you dont want to look like an uneducated idiot.
