Consider this:

Fact: the human race has been around for hundreds of thousands of years.

Fact: the concepts of an afterlife, of gods, spirits, etc. have only been around for a few millenia.

Fact: these concepts were invented and promulgated by ignorant barbarians as an attempt to explain the world around them, before there was a such thing as science or epistemology.

Fact: most of the books of the bible were written by people who were never there, as second- or third-hand accounts decades or even centuries after the events they claim to tell about.

Fact: the books of the bible have been heavily edited over the centuries, with passages or even whole books being re-written or omitted to fit the theological and political climates of the time.

Fact: the books of the bible have also been subject to extensive errors, misinterpretations, and differences of opinion in interpretation as they are translated from one language to another and from that to yet another language.

Knowing all this, how can ANY religion be viewed as anything BUT the invention of men? I know this may not be what you want to hear, and I doubt I'll do much harm to your faith; faith is remarkably impervious to reason.

Religion and god is as real as the tooth fairy....primitive man needed the 'religious experience' to survive in a hostile universe. The unknown was explained by the supernatural, the idea of an afterlife cushioned people from the grim aspects of death, in short, it was a survival mechanism developed within the temporal lobe of all human brains.

Modern man has developed rational thought and controls much of the environment, to the extent of knowing how 'things operate'. But obsolete genes do not die overnight, therefore you'll always be seeing people believing in religion, god and the supernatural.

I read about some interesting studies by scientists of the temporal lobe regions that are 'mis-firing' or giving off 'unbalanced' neuroligical signals. Some of the studies are intrigueing, they can duplicate 'religious experiences' in blind tests of humans.

It was already known that the more primitive limbic system of our brains contain the raw emotion where our religious beliefs spring forth. The development of the cerebral cortex (or the thinking and rational part of the brain) is only a recent development in humans, say the last 40,000-100,000 years.

It is also well known that the 'god-gene' (for lack of a better description) is triggered during times of duress, high anxiety, near death or starvation, and other high emotional episodes. It was our survival instinct that developed this so-called god-gene.

Now, scientists can atificially trigger that response under laboratory conditions by narrowing the focus to the temporal regions of the brain. Further studies are being conducted to study this gene and its effect on our development as a species.

Although I may not have answered your question....proving a negative (as you may know that's a logical impossibility but common Theist comment), i've given a reason why humans believe in a higher being.

If your God created mankind and loves you so much, then why is there war, disease, poverty, and hate even in the ranks of your most devout? If your God truly loves mankind, such negative aspects would not exist, not to mention one of the most basic commandments of your faith "thou shall not kill" is violated every day by thousands upon thousands, as well aspast atrocities such as the crusades, the inquisition, etc. I'm not personally atheist, but I do recognize that many religions have some severe flaws in the doctrine, and many amount to little more than population control by establishing an environment of fear, because fear is the easiest means to power. As the old saying goes "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" look how much power the major religions have in the world, if you look close enough, every one of these religions is riddled with corruption to some degree because they have one thing in common, POWER over the weak-minded.

There is no evidence for any deity. You don't disprove a negative honey. You prove that Ra, Odin, Thor, and the Tooth Fairy don't exist.

Howard my Jewish buddy thinks that the Jehovah's Witness knocking on his door is doing it suitable. they're preaching the forged information of God's Kingdom. The gentleman ones confirmed Howard--with me finding at his shoulder--Luke 17:5-10. it somewhat is regarding the apostles asking Jesus to furnish them greater faith. Jesus informed a demonstration regarding the grasp and the slave. the factor being that to believe in God and Jesus one might desire to do the works they have ordained like preaching from living house to living house.
