I am taking a bartending class through my Union. I am mastering the drinks and am participating but the problem is that I don't drink and neither does my family and I want to get more practice with pouring and using the jigger. With our class size, I might get to make one or two drinks a class (class meets every Monday). I really don't want to buy a bunch of booze just to pour it into the sink. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

use water tinted with food coloring to practice. you can even ask your local bar for empties. check out also www.totallyfreebartending.com. good luck !

you can get an empty bottle, and use colored water (food coloring in the water) to practice pouring. That's what I did (I did a free on-line course to see if I can do it)

You can buy a bottle of wine for a $3 - 4 at most Wal-marts, that way it's not painful to pour it down the drain.

find a small local bar and tell the bartender your situation and see if he (or she) will let you help out sometime and tell them you want very little or no pay. they sure to accept the free help and you can get some on the job experience, if this dosen't seem like a good idea meet some friends that drink they'll love having their own personal bartender

if you have any drinking friends go and offer your services at their houses. turn it into a party and explain. may be they will like the free service. go to the nearest pub you like. talk with the manager or owner explain you want practice and would be willing to work for free a couple hours on their busiest nights for the practice. this may lead to job opportunities in the future, if you fancy. do you belong to any clubs that offer alcohol ?offer your services.? talk with your union rep. ,see if he or she has any suggestions. practice with non alcoholic items that look like the real thing. put some food coloring in water and make your own bottles up. make virgin drinks for you or your family.good luck

I'm having a dinner party next weekend. If you want the practice, I'd love a free bartender.
You might find folks with similar willingness in your area.

can you ask to shadow another bartender at some event or to help free of charge, explaining that you want to be in the thick of it rather than just doing scut work of course-which could happen if you are not clear on that.
