As I understand, the Mutts and Moms rescue gang apparently wouldn't let Ellen's hairdresser keep the little dog Iggy because she had a 10 and 12 year old daughter and their rules were their dogs are not placed with families who have children 14 or under. Do you think this is fair? Should families with children under the age of 14 be able to adopt puppies and kittens?

That Mutts and Moms owner sounds a little controlling and cracked anyway.

Yes, families with children under 14 should be able to adopt pets.

I think that pet adoption place has the right to have any rules it wants to. That is all I will say on that.

I personally think it's great to have kids with pets. If someone asked me how old should their child be when adopting I would recommend the age of 4. Kids at that age have a better understanding of, "Be gentle", and they are able to run and play better a little bit older,

I would also suggest getting an older dog. Having a puppy is like having another child. They have to be house broken, they are very hyper (and not always so gentle), and they eat everything. Some of those toys can be dangerous to pets if they eat them.

It's not a matter of that age being right or wrong. That would just be my suggestion.

I read that she could not keep the dog because Ellen was approved for the dog, but then gave it away without asking the rescue group.

However - yes, as a general rule I think families with young ones should be allowed to adopt pets (dogs/cats). We have a dog ourselves, and she gets along great with our two very young sons. I think pets enrich our lives in many ways. However - some dogs/cats are just not good with young children (my parents' dog is not a good kid dog, for example, just due to his temperament); many adoption places will tell you this up front. The rescue group has to place the pet with the best possible home.

Yes why shouldn't they be. I wouldn't adopt from a place like that :(..not that I cuold i have a new one on the way and a nine year old.

RIght now I"m not allowed to have dogs b/c the apartment I live in. But my mom has dogs and I have two cats. I was raised around dogs, cats, and a variety of other animals lol from cows to lizards. From the time I was a tiny baby till I moved out. My daughter has been as well. I think it teaches kids respect (not to hurt things that can't take care of them selves) responisbility, empathy, sympathy, about life ( my daughter was 2 when she itnessed her first birth) and death sadly some puppies from that litter died.

Bah that organization needs to rethink themselves.

I think that it is ridiculous to put an age limit on adopting a pet. I got my oldest cat when she was a kitten and my son was 8 months old and his sister was 7.5. Now 5 years later we've recently added a new kitten and a puppy and I'm due with my third child in a few days. So from my experience kids and pets definitely go together regardless of age.

Of course families with children should be able to own pets! When my daughter (now 5) was born, I had a dog and 3 elderly cats. We still have the dog, and we've since added a hamster, 2 fish, and most recently, a kitten.

Parents need to teach their children to be gentle with animals, and they need to use good judgment about what types of pets are best for their particular child.

I think it was because the dog was so small. Smaller dogs are more easily injured by children. I myself have a 5 1/2 yr. old and a 4 lb. yorkie. I have to watch my daughter very closely because I don't want the dog hurt from rough play. I'm sure they over-reacted about the kids being aged 11 and 14 though. I think they are old enough to know the dog can't fly!

Why shouldn´t they? I have a dog AND a cat who are adopted, and I have a 3.5 year old daughter... I understad if the animal has been badly treated by kids and feels uncomfortable around them, but as a general rule I think it´s wrong.

Absolutely yes! Having pets is a great way to teach compassion and responsibility. I know some pets are not great with kids but there are plenty that are. Assuming you can properly care for the pet and they are a good match in your home, there is no reason not to have pets with kids of any age.

Well of course. We have a dog and a cat and are not planning on giving them up when the baby arrives. I think it's great when children have a pet. It teaches them responsibility and it's a fun companion for them.
