I had a Shih Tzu when my daughter was born and I had had the dog for 11 years prior to that. She was extremely curious of the crib when I put it in the bedroom and would smell around it all the time. However, the very first night that I had my daughter home from the hospital, my daughter cried non-stop all night long! Molly (the dog) sat on the end of my bed howling and barking!!!! I had had a C-section and between the crying, the howling, the barking, the incision pain, and probably a fair dose of post-partum depression, I laid in bed and cried with them!!!!! It was almost the worst night of my life! Good news is that we all settled down within the first few days that my daughter was home and the dog and the baby actually became very good pals. Molly never really seemed jealous because whenever I would nurse my daughter I would call Molly up on the couch and pet her. That way she knew that I hadn't "replaced" her. It just takes time for everyone to get used to one another and to get a schedule in place that benefits all involved. Best of luck to you!

Your dog needs to be excresized till he is tired/relax. He should already have a VERY solid foundation of Sit, stay, leave it, down, and out (leave the room) The dog should NOT jump up. All it takes is for him to jump up on to you, and knock the baby, or knock you over etc. Before you brought the baby home, you should have brought something home that smells like baby, and start getting him used to the routine/sounds you would have when you bring baby home.

Mostly curious. If you continue to also give the dog attention as well,he wont get jealous and will also love and protect the baby. Just dont let your dog feel like hes not included in the family. At first he might want to sniff the baby, and get his scent and then know that the baby is part of the family, which he will eventually accept.

My dog (a lab/shepherd/collie/? mix) was very curious at first. She kept wanting to touch the baby's head with her nose to check her temperature (which I let her do). Visitors would sometimes hold the baby and not let the dog sniff or touch. Skye (the dog) would get a little agitated until I intervened on her behalf.

Quinn is now 5, Skye is 12, and they're best buddies.

i have a pitbull adn a daushund they where both really curious so i sat on the couch with the baby and let them smell him i husband held on 2 their collars just in case but they where just really curious and since my dogs know their toys as babies we used the word puppy for the baby. (what works works right) also so they wouldnt feel left out my vet said to give them both "jobs" so we bought small backpacks like the ones from the 90's or go to petco and put stuff for the baby in it. I told the pitbull ur helpin the puppy now and put a can of formula in her backpack and everytime the baby cried she's come runnin up to c if we needed her and he daushund had a backpack with a blanket and a couple of diapers. it might sound weird but it worked for us hope this helps

When had a Scottie that we had for 8 years before our son was born. When we brought him home, we let her smell him and we gave her lots of attention. Remember, up till now your dog has been the "baby". We also let her have one of his blankets he had slept with so she would get used to his smell and know that he belonged. On a few occasions she did poop under his crib, but she did not do it very often and only for a short period of time. Who knows why she did it.
