If the company has a physical presence in your state, there is a high probability that the company must collect the appropriate amount of sales taxes from you. If the company does not have a physical presence in your state and they have not filed to collect sales taxes in your state, then they will not collect the sales taxes from you. However, some states also have a "use" tax. A use tax means that the buyer should pay the sales tax amount to the state on purchases where sales tax is not collected but otherwise would have been if the seller had been registered to collect sales tax.

Maybe. If the company has a physical presence in your state, you'll be taxed. For example toys r us and barnes and noble have retail outlets in most if not all states, so if you buy online from barnesandnoble.com or toysrus.com, you'll pay tax.

Yes in your home state. I had bought a bunch of stuff, and a year later I got a tax bill. It sucks.
