Generally, the best pets are
SHELTER MUTTS!!!
They're temperment tested, inexpensive and come with lots of "extras". You save a life too.
Any and all of those you choose are great. Just do some research as to training, exersize needs, etc.

Hi,
We have some friends with a loving male beagle, all the family loves him and he is very friendly. Unfortunately, he has lost his eyesight, which they told me that it is generic to a beagle. He is about 9 or 10 years old. Some people like smaller dogs, however, they seem to need more care and can get sick if they do not have just the right environment.
My cousin has had a Pappillon that she trained to assist in hearing sounds(the deaf), and that dog seemed to be great for her at the time. She also had a cairn terrier, that she had trained and was a good watch dog for such a small animal.
The dogs on your list especially the Newfoundand could be very agressive and not always good around children. Also, they weigh upwards of 150 pounds.
I totally dislike bulldogs as they were bred to heard cattle and even though i have read they are good with children i really do not agree. I do know that purebred bulldogs can cost over a thousand dollars as we had a friend that had a very interesting one with a different look other than brown. A worker friend had a Great Dane and she couldn't control her and she kept going for the garbage therefore she gave it away. Also, the do not have a very long life span.
I like the cavalier king charles spaniel even though they might be near a thousand and could need additional care, perhaps in the food area. These king charles seem friendly but are very close to the ground.
German Shepards can be excellent guard dogs and seem to be used for many purposes, like sniffing drugs, sniffing bombs, chasing criminals, also walking to work they check the trucks entering the Boeing Headquarters in Chicago for bombs, etc. We met a man in San Diego, California that had a german shepard to guard his boat( probably 25 to 30 feet long), that he was living on in the harbor. He would not tell us his name for the man's safety. This man had joined a group that trained shepard's and seemed to like the group.
Also, shepards come in all colors from black to red.
Shepards can be small or large, and always very smart.
Check your spelling of Shepeard, it is wrong.
Also, all you can do is google dogs and probably find more information.
That is all I know,
We never had a dog, as they are like a small child needing more attention every second or so.
In my suburb we have a ordinance that everyone must pick up their dogs poop or get fined or reported to the city.
Also, in Chicago the aldermen on the City Council sometimes talk about banning killer attack dogs, like the pit bull, the rotweiller, and the shepard as some of these dogs are used in dog fight's that people gamble on something like cockfighting except it must be more dangerous to the animals.
Sometimes on the animal planet one can find instances where the ASPCA visits a site with fighting dogs.
Good luck,
Delago

Different dogs for different people. Not everyone clicks with each breed. Each breed is entirely different, and has their own personality traits and different energy levels. My advice would be to get a book on different breeds and check out their personalities, or write a list of breeds down that you might be interested in and check on line about each individual breed. All the dogs that you had listed are all great dogs, but you must also decide if you want them for protection, or just companionship, or a good family dog with children. I have had German Shepherds which are great family dogs, but they do require lots of patience, and love at the beginning when they are puppies because they do have lots of energy, and need room to run, and they are great house dogs and can be great with kids. The English Bulldog, is very sensitive, lovable, playful, and intelligent. They are costly, but worth it if you truly are into that breed. We have one and we love her to no end, shes so well behaved, and adorable! Good luck with which ever one you choose!

It most definitely depends on what type of person you are and how much time you have to train your baby. There is a website that may be able help you pick the best dog for you.
I have found that dachshunds and pugs are best for me, b/c I love my little babies to want to be with me all the time and I feel the same about them. The dachsie is a bit overprotective, while the pug is a little bit on the "Hey, how ya doin'? Wanna walk around the block?" So, they seem to be balancing eachother pretty well, and I like both of those characteristics. Hope this helps.

A healthy dog from a reputable breeder. There is no single best dog breed - the best dog is the one that best fits in with your lifestyle. The best dog (for me) is a greyhound - I have one and he is just wonderful...but they are not for everyone. I don't really like Beagles, they are far too active for my lifestyle.

well, in general, i usually like mixed breed, because they seem to have less health problems and often pick up the best traits from different breeds
if you are looking for a family dog, good around kids, pugs and newfoundlands have great temperments in general, but dogs DO have personalitys and dont always act like their breed "should"
