I just went to the vet last week and asked my vet the same question (my kitten is 4 months old) - she said as soon as a cat reaches 5 lbs it can be spayed/neutered. However, if the cat isn't sexually mature (if their organs aren't developed enough to reproduce), the surgery will be more invasive, which will lead to a longer recovery time and possibly more pain for the kitty. I'm waiting another month to have my kitten neutered.
Also, if your male cat wasn't neutered, you'd notice. It's hard to tell if females have been spayed, but with males it's pretty easy to tell if they've been neutered or not (for obvious reasons). However, when in doubt - ask the vet!

The way you can tell if a male cat is neutered is that his scrotum is flat instead of bulging out. That's because his testicles were removed. A female is harder to tell but the only way to know for sure is if she starts showing signs of going into heat. This usually occurs when they are about five months old. It used to be that vets would recommend a female cat go into heat first before being spayed but now that idea has been discarded. Many animal shelters spay female kittens when they're six weeks old before offering them up for adoption. They do that because many people don't bother bringing their animals back to get them spayed and let them breed, which contributes to the pet population problem.

Contrary to your understanding, this is very, very common behavior in male cats, neutered or otherwise. It is not a habit that he'll stop. It also does no serious harm to the other cat. However, if it disturbs your friend that much, she should return the kitten to the animal shelter. He would probably be much more welcome in a home where there are no other pets. Oh -by the way - his being a shelter cat has nothing to do with his acting-out behavior.

i don't know about the male but my female kitten was spayed at 9 weeks at the shelter i got her from. i thought there was a mistake because it was so early but when we checked with the doctor she said yes it was right.
i would get it done at the 3 month period.
i know male dogs still try to breed after being neutered so i guess cats could too??
good luck.

get her spayed as early as possible (as long as she wasnt underweight or just a really skinny kitten, most vets will do it just after 8 wks).
do NOT wait until 6 mos b/c she may go in her first heat if u accidentally wait too long.
and as for your boy, if he doesnt have any of the "physical" signs of not being neutered, then he should be (humping is normal...and its possible you are confusing his behavior with what is really "kangaroo kicks" which cats looooove to do to big toys.)

This can be common among cats and dogs both. I have a male cat who we didnt neuter until he was well grown. The instinct still was there for a long time. He still was acting like a tom cat, trying to "make sweet love" to the females.
