To lose weight your diet is the most important thing.
You can run on the tread mill ALL DAY LONG and if your diet is crap and you aren't eating in a deficit then you will NOT lose weight.

The more intense the exercise, the more calories you burn. I suggest going at a medium-high intensity instead of doing very long low intensity sessions. Higher intensity shorter time allows you to burn more fat, lose less muscle.

There is a myth going around that low intensity longer cardio gets you in a "fat burning zone" this is a huge myth, and it is proven that longer cardio also increases the chance of muscle loss.

Look into High Intensity Interval training ( google it )

It's actually a combination of both. To burn the most fat in the most efficient way, you have to do interval training. Start with a 5-minute warmup- a brisk walk should do it. Increase your speed until you're at a 4 or 5 on your level of difficulty (1 being very easy and 10 being the hardest). After two minutes, increase your speed to about a 7 or 8 on your level of difficulty. After two minutes, return to the speed you were at in the 4-5 range. Continue doing this for 20 minutes, then take a 5 minute cool-down. Because your heart rate and metabolism speed up during a fast spurt, you continue to burn more calories even when you're going slower, rather than staying at the same speed and burning the same amount of calories. It's a win-win!
But no matter how you get exercise, you should aim for 30 minutes, 3-5 times per week. Remember: some is ALWAYS better than none. Good luck!

The best method for weight loss utilizing a treadmill is probably interval training. If you've reached a plateu in your progression give it a shot, its pretty effective.

hands down high intensity interval training is optimum for increasing the resting metabolic rate which increases fatty acid oxidation. you want to focus on increasing the distance traveled in the same amount of training time. this is how you increase your cardiovascular endurance which increases your ability to exercise at a high level of exercise for longer periods of time, basically increasing the V02Max. the higher your VO2Max the higher your resting metabolic rate will be in the hours after exercise, when real fat loss takes place.

Time and difficulty are what make the difference. The more resistance that you have during your workout the more you are getting from it. I learned that from a personal trainer and a cardiac stress test technician. Good luck!
