Is it the new hip thing?

I personally don't think it is "cool". I am an atheist because I see things in reality and I would rather live right here right now because you are not guaranteed a second life. Also I am very intelligent and I see things scientifically and mathematically. The fundamental question that all 6 year olds ask is where did "God" come from? No one has an answer. I think why more people are admitting to being atheist because parents are pressing their kids less into religion and people are already announcing it. (Especially celebrities/heroes/sports figures) Also a there are laws now that religion cannot be forced on you in school and kids are more aware on that. The bottom line is the less pressure you put on kids to do something the less they do it. If a teacher says "Do this homework assignment tonight. It will take you six hours and its only worth 5 points." When you have hundreds in the class, one person will do it. Now on the other hand if the teacher said "Do this homework assignment, it is worth 90% of your grade it will take six hours." All but two kids or less will do it. Bottom line less pressure, less likely to do something.

I don't think so. I'm one of the few serious atheists that I know, and I'm one because religions have always seemed so totally made-up to me and because I can find so many holes in the teachings and things that absolutely make no sense and don't add up.(mainly with Christianity because that's the religion everyone around me is so that's the religion that I know the most about and think the most about and have to hear everyone talk about.)
Anyways, so no- I'm not an atheist because I think it's cool. And everyone else I know is at least agnostic and people always seem to look down on atheists like it's bad to not believe in (what i think is) silly superstition.
As for atheism being a trend... Last I read, "faith" is on the rise in America. So atheism is definitely not a current trend.

Well, I'm not an Atheist. But I can honestly say some of the Atheists I've met are cool (and not because they are Atheist). Because they will actually talk With me... and not DOWN TO me. =)

I don't thing anyone becomes an Atheist because it's the "hip" thing to do. People become Atheists because they see no evidence of any kind of Higher Power or Supernatural. With them being the minority, I don't see how anyone can think it's the "hip" thing to do.

i dont know if it is the new "hip" thing or not. but it really depends on the person. If you just say that to get attention (and like you say, to look cool) you're not really impressing anybody. But i cant think of how that makes you look cool? I myself am agnostic, i seriously really do want to believe, but i just find it hard to belive in something that i've never seen and there is also so much evidence that contradicts religion. I really hate getting into religiouse arguements. Since religion is important to people worldwide, its seriously an important issue. If you just go around saying that you dont believe in god just to be a rebelious, and to look "cool," without having an actuall opinion on the topic, all it is doing is making you an ignorant pest.

No I think it isn't something that they do to be cool. Speaking from my own perspective, I am agnostic not atheist - i think that sometimes it is a necessity to be atheist. Some people have terrible things happen to them and instead of clinging to a God or religion to help them the opposite happens. Sometimes - It may be hard to grasp onto this for some, but sometimes it's easier not to believe than to believe.

Instead of putting atheists down, how about trying to understand them?

No, actually the new hip thing is people breaking off into logically thought out decisions, not just atheism, but other life-changing decisions--for the better of us all. But I for one do think it's cool to be able to consider myself an atheist in America. And there's nothing you can say or do to stop me! Peace.

It is not a question of being 'cool' or 'hip'. Atheism, as a moral and ethical philosophy has been around for a long time and it is ridiculous to equate it with a teenage fad or fashion. It is, however, an encouraging sign that many young people are beginning to see through the sham of organised religion and realise that it is the greatest fraud ever perpetrated on mankind.

To my understanding atheists don't believe in God. And Ashleyy you believe in God so that makes you a christian even if you were not brought up in a church. No matter what religion you are atheist, catholic, Lutheran, baptist ect. it is your choice no matter what someone else thinks of it. I have a relative that is Jehovah witness. I don't agree with alot of his beliefs but I respect his choice. Now days most of the young kids that have become Gothic and atheists are in groups like "gangs" I'm hoping most will grow out of it because to me it's a way to get attention. Like the kids that are in our school that are Gothic won't participate or dress out for gym. It's like a demonstration to them. Again it's all a matter of opinion.

Maybe it's cool in some circles.. but in general "atheist" has a very negative connotation. People judge. It's associated with "militant atheist", i.e. someone who flaunts their amorality and picks fights with Christians. Most atheists are just naturalists and often highly moral people who generally keep quiet about religion unless some religious dingbat insists on bringing it up.

Yes, I do. I think people look at being atheist as being rebellious and enjoy the title even though most that claim that status don't truly understand what they are saying.

I hope it is not the new hip thing to do.
