In an 8th Grade History Text Book, or just about any major museum's website that has an article about it. There's a museum near Lexington Missouri that talks about the battle there, and probably has background info on the causes. A lot of it was about rights, vote distribution in the legislature, and oppressive ordinances being enacted upon the south. If you didn't already know, Lee pretty much butchered the Union up until Gettysburg, where he lost a lot of his troops, and shortly after, Grant returned the favor and drove the Confederate troops back through Virginia and forced a (generous for its time) surrender against Lee, who would have lost the battle anyway.

Some southern states had declared that if Abe Lincoln won the election of 1860 that they'd break off from the Union, such as South Carolina.

Sure - look right here.

I. The Free Trade Policy - under the influence of John C, Calhoun, led to the experiment of Nullification.

II. The Advocacy of Slavery - both as already exisiting in the Southern States, and as proposed in the new territories of the Federal Union.

III. The Doctrine of State Sovereignty and Supremacy - in opposition to the policy of Federal Centralization and Power.

Don't look at American history books, do your own research, through the library, it was not as much about slavery as it was about massive taxation of the Southern States.
