Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, is the nation's oldest spa. There are some bed and breakfast inns (not modern, but very affordable), and Tari's Restaurant on the main drag has rooms upstairs. I stayed there once a few years ago, and the room is clean, fairly quiet, and comfortable. It's been a while since I've been, so I don't recall the Berkeley Springs website, but you can look it up, I'm sure.

Berkeley Springs is about 90 minutes to 2 hours from Washington, DC.

Give Chincoteague, Virginia a try. It's not on a major interstate, so it doesn't get as crowded as some coastal towns like Ocean City. You can relax in a decent motel, eat really great seafood at the local restaurants, check out the wild horses that graze on the marsh grass on nearby Assateague Island, hike through the parks there, and take a long, long walk on an uncrowded beach.

Other fun things to do there are picking up kites at a local shop and flying them on the beach, spotting bald eagles in the treetops, taking a boat or fishing tour of the wetlands, checking out the nearby NASA science center, or going sea kayaking in the calm waters between the islands.

It's just a funky, charming little place that's off the beaten path and a great place to relax and unwind. You can find both little bed and breakfasts and a few large chain hotels, depending on your tastes. I've been twice and loved it...I know someone who returns every year with his whole family.

Williamsburg, VA. There's the colonial section, and Busch Gardens should be opening for Halloween right about now. VA Beach isn't very much further down if you want to make a run down there.

Atlantic City is also a 4 hour drive away. There are some cheaper hotels further out from the casinos. Most of the casinos have cheap parking rates.

How about Rocky Gap Resort near Cumberland, MD. Mountains, Golf, Horseback Riding for less than $100 a night. The place needs business and what a way to support the Western MD economy.

Chincoteague is closer to 4 hours away than 3.

There's always Middleburg, Virginia. It's right in the middle of horse/hunt country and was one of Jackie Kennedy's weekend destinations when she was first lady. There are several awesome restaurants in town and a lot to see in the area. There are multiple bed and breakfasts and inns to stay at. If you do go, check out the Backstreet Cafe and be sure to get a cookie or three at the Upper Crust (it's right beside the Safeway in town).

Williamsburg, VA
Shenandoah National Park (The Inn at Washington)
Any of the wineries around
West Virginia
Gettysburg
Lancaster County
Philadelphia
Rehoboth Beach
Bethany Beach

All of these are great places and most are in their off season.

I'd recommend the Addy Sea Inn in Bethany Beach. It is a beautiful, romantic bed-and-breakfast right on the water; during the off-season you practically have the whole beach to yourself and the off-season rates are definitely affordable. The couple who run the place are gracious hosts and take good care of you.
