Is it the parent's responsibility to pay a child/young adult's traffic tickets,or probation fees? What do you think. I run into this all the time - my kid would be paying his own fines so he would learn not to do it again but somehow these parents feel they are helping their kids - can someone explain this? Am I missing something?

Didn't mean to offend - my kid is only 16. I still consider him to be my child. When he gets closer to eighteen - we'll consider yound adult, lol!

Its crap! If my child ever got in trouble like that.. and he had probation fee's or Court fee, I would make him earn the money to pay his fee's. even if it was mowing yard, raking leaves, or taking orders at McDonald's. It would teach him that his action have consequences and he needs to consider that before he does anything stupid.
I think parent sugar coat thing for kids so they can be "friends" with their children, or so they don't feel hated. But i got news for them. Those kids HAVE friends.. and they need a parent!!! Some one to guide them, and teach them how to become well rounded adults!

Well, where I am--Midwest--It is, legally, the parents responsibility, until the teen is 17. At age 17 around here, kids can and do get put in jail. The Judge in my small town believes that kids need to pay for their own actions...so he will find something for the teens to do to make money to pay the fines. If it be washing windows in the courthouse, downtown garbage duty, washing all the police cars, etc.. My oldest got in with the wrong crowd, and although I could/can control what happens in/around my house as far as friends...I cannot be with him every minute of the day like at school....anyway, he ended up on Probation for 1 year for making a 'Jacka$$' Video and damaged some city property. We were supposed to pay for the probation fees, and court fees which I told the Judge I thought was outrageous considering we didn't commit the offense. He agreed and my son had to wash all the police cars, wash the windows downtown wearing a t-shirt that said 'I damage other people's property for fun'. He was so embarrassed because so many people saw him, and honked and took pics and all, that, I have not had one ounce of difficulty with him! Besides of course the usual teenage antics like back-talk, missing curfew, dirty room and so on.
NO YOU are not missing something.....the parents who bail out their kids are letting their kids miss out on valuable life-lessons.

I don't know about legally either, but if the kid is old enough to get into trouble then the kid is old enough to pay for his/her mistakes. Parents who bail there kids out are only going to make it harder for them to learn about consequences later in life and they are setting their kids up for failure later in life. I can understand if the parent pays for the ticket/bail money up front but I hope that they then make the children pay them back by doing hard chores or getting a job. If the kids gets a speeding ticket, I think the kid should loose car priviages until the ticket is paid back. Anyway, you are not the one missing anything, I think you are right on track.

Is it the parents responsibility? Legally? I've never experienced this first hand, but I know that if it were my child, they would be paying their own fines. I'm with you in that parents who pay the fines for their kids are not doing them any favors. They aren't learning from their mistakes when mom and dad fly to the rescue. I believe the only way children learn from their mistakes is to take responsibility for them themselves. So, no, you are not missing anything. You are being a responsible parent.

I got a ticket once from one of those red light cameras (which are total BS by the way) and my parents picked up the tab.

Years after the fact I haven't had any traffic violations. So in my case, yes, my parents did help me by paying for my fine.

I find it odd that you said "child/young adult's" since no child should be getting traffic tickets :-p

Take advantage of this and let the sixteen-year-old pay for the tickets, court fees, etc. It's too good of a learning opportunity to pass up, Better he learn consequences now, while he's young.

OK. They are doing the "Polite" thing to do.
Perhaps that guy can't find any other source of monetary aid to pay for tickets.
