If my family were to get another dog, I would want to make sure it would be one that is compatible in temprament, gentleness, and size with my 25lb Beagle (male). I would want to get a dog that our beagle would have fun with. Any suggestions on what to get or what NOT to get?

Beagles are great dogs and are generally very friendly. How does your dog act around other dogs? When you pass other dogs on the street or go to parks where there are other dogs, does he show any signs of timidness, aggression, dominance or aloofness? What about food? Is your dog overly-protective of his food, or are you able to reach down and take his bowl away while he's eating?

If not, I don't think your beagle will have any trouble adjusting to a new dog. As you probably know, they are very playful and can probably have fun with everything. It's not something that depends on breed though, it's something that depends on the personality of both dogs.

Some breeders and shelters will allow you to bring your dog in to let him meet the new dog you're getting before you take it home. In fact, some breeders even request that you do so, so that they know their puppy will not be the subject of jealousy, dominance or aggression. Call around and ask if they will let you do this.

In short, be sure to consider other things like spatial, grooming and exercise requirements before you get the other dog. I have seen beagles play with miniature schnauzers and labradors and even great danes.

Beagles get along with just about anyone. They're pack animals, so another beagle or a foxhound or harrier would always be a good choice. Dachshund would be good too, or Boston Terrier, or Pug. Any dog would be fine, but those are most similar to beagles in size and personality.

Depends on your beagle- every beagle is different. I have had two beagles and they were about as different as two dogs could be. Thankfully they both go along fine with our other two dogs (a mini dashie and a black lab mix). If I were you I would take your beagle to a shelter (or breeder) and let your dog meet other dogs. Your dog will help you choose which dog is right family.

Well you could always look in your nearby shelter for a dog about your beagles age, bring the beagle to see if they'd get along. Or you could try a beagle hybrid, like a puggle.
