In Viet Nam, I was terrified of the thought of being captured or maimed by explosives. I was not fearful of dying though. I had this fantasy if overrun I would kill myself with a grenade and take an enemy or two along. (Too many John Wayne movies) Well about 5-1/2 weeks before I was to return home, I was shot through the chest and right lung. I was trying my best to shoot the one who shot me. But I was unable to use my right arm. Strangely, I was almost giddy that it didn't really hurt. That all changed though when they got me to the hospital and given a shot of morphine. Hurt like hell itself. Yes, I had also considered shooting myself if I were severely wounded. But, my experience demonstrated that both options were only fantasies. With the good medical care I healed. I only got a very small taste of being wounded. My heart really goes out to those losing limbs, sight, permanent head trauma and most of all burns. I sometimes make people mad for being anti war. Hopefully, this explains a bit of why.

I have relatives who died during the Holocaust. Myself and many others have sworn never again. I will not allow myself to be put in that situation. If I was in a hostage situation and they offered me a gun to shoot myself and promised to let me go. I probably would end up dead. But every bullet in that gun would have been fired into as many of the bad guys as I could get.

Well it's hard for anyone to say how they would react in such situations to be honest. I can't be sure what I would do if I actually were in a situation like this, but looking at this right now I would take the gun and shoot as many of them (the people holding me hostage) as I could.

If I was a hostage...and they gave me a gun...those sonsofabitches would have three bullet holes in there chest, I don't care if I'd be toast at least I would take them with me...
This is what I think I'd do, never been in that situation...but shooting yourself to be released...is stupid and cowardly and they probably were saying that for sh*ts and giggles in the first place :D

Who's to say that shot in the arm wouldn't hit a major artery, then you'd have killed yourself and not the hostage takers.
No, I wouldn't shoot myself because it'd leave a boo-boo a Flintstone band aid couldn't cover.
Never negotiate with terrorists.

How would shooting yourself in a hostage situation save your life? And if you were in a hostage situation, how would you have a gun?

The only way I would ever shoot myself is if I was facing a slow painful death that I knew was going to happen.

if this was a bank situation, what makes you think that they would let you go and what if you died anyway? if it were a military situation you aren't supposed to accept special conditions and parole from your captors, so no i would not, and if i had a weapon in my hand i would use it on them instead.
