I'm just wondering how it's done and whether it hurts. I've had root canal done on that tooth before but now they want to extract it, and the dentist told me he'd have to do a surgical tooth extraction. So how long does it take and does it hurt? because "surgery" sounds like it would.

I had the same process done today. They sedated me with nitrous gas then used the regular numbing medication. I felt the shots, but it didn't hurt as much. Once I was numbed, I didn't feel anything. They had to cut the gum to get it out. It was over within 20 minutes, maybe 15.

since i just had this exact thing done today i can tell ya that the pain was pretty harsh. after-not during. i never use the gas and i generally do not use a local either as i hate the numb and i can handle pain pretty well. today they insisted on the local because it was a tooth that previously had a root canal. they said it would be a little tougher. well they were right. 3 hours later i cried and cried. it hurt so bad. remember i usually use nothing! during the extraction was nothing. but afterwards oh man! youch! the stitch blew out before i got home. i was drenched in blood and had uncontrollable bleeding for 5 hours. they don't do anything for that. just keep packing it with gauze which is a whole other subject. talk about chafing. well not to scare you, not all are this bad but it is possible. it doesn't take long. after they numbed me i was driving in 45 minutes.
good luck hope yours is better. one word of advise. when they give you the prescription for vicodin-skip it. take 2 advil about an hour afterwards. when the numb wears off the advil will be kicking in already. don't wait for it to hurt before taking something.

TERRY,
ALL THIS MEANS IS THAT THE DOCTOR MUST TAKE A DRILL AND SPLIT THE TOOTH INTO 2 PARTS AND TAKE EACH HALF OUT SEPARATELY.
YOU WILL HAVE ANESTHETIC SO YOU DON'T FEEL ANYTHING. IF ANYTHING THIS IS FASTER AND MORE GENTLE THAN A TYPICAL EXTRACTION WHERE FORCEPS ARE USED TO FORCIBLY EXTRACT THE TOOTH.
IF HE ATTEMPTS TO EXTRACT WITH FORCEPS THE TOOTH WILL SHATTER AND WILL NEED TO BE SURGICALLY EXTRACTED WHERE BONE MAY BE DRILLED TO GET THE FRAGMENTS OUT. YOU WILL BE FINE.
TEETH THAT HAD A ROOT CANAL BECOME BRITTLE WITH TIME AND MUST BE EXTRACTED SURGICALLY.

I can't imagine itd hurt TOO bad, depending on the tooth. Defiantly sore for a few days, but they'll probably supply you with numbing stuff, or you can buy some.

i latterly went to my dentist for persistent soreness from enamel that have been broken off on the gum line and grew to become into advised an identical factor, that i could ought to make certain an oral surgeon for surgical extraction by way of fact, there wasn't sufficient fabric to tug them out without reducing into the gum. before I observed an oral surgeon, I moved and a few months later, my mouth began to break back. So, I went to a clean dentist and advised him my concern and what my previous dentist stated and while he appeared, he desperate to objective it himself by way of fact i grew to become into in alot of soreness. nicely, after numbing me up relatively nicely, he went in and pulled all 3 enamel that have been inflicting my soreness, the enamel that have been broken on the gum line and "had to be bumped off surgically". i grew to become into relatively worried by way of fact, I hate the dentist - it relatively is what led to this concern interior the 1st place. My factor is, get a 2nd opinion, extraordinarily while it includes surgical operation and your wellbeing. good success!!
