I'm readying King Lear by Shakespeare and I have to find some examples of spiritual bankruptcy, but I'm not entirely sure of what it means.

In a revelation to the apostle John toward the close of the first century, the glorified Jesus Christ delivered a message to the congregation located in Laodicea, Asia Minor. It was a warning message against materialism. Though materially rich, Laodicean Christians were bankrupt spiritually. Instead of continuing to walk by faith, they allowed material possessions to blind their spiritual vision. Materialism has a similar effect today. It weakens our faith and causes us to stop ‘running with endurance the race’ for life. If we are not careful, the “pleasures of this life” can smother spiritual activities to the point that they are “completely choked.”—Luke 8:14.

Well here on earth we seek money and riches but Jesus spoke of laying up riches in heaven. When we become Christians, our focus is no longer on the things of the world but saving souls for Gods kingdom.

I would suppose in the context of your question it refers to those who are deprived of any sense of moral compass or restraint against evil in the pursuit of selfish ambition, in a wanton disregard for the well-being of others and without a fear of God.
In a positive sense it could refer to those who are aware of their own lack of moral strength and their desperate need of God's help to enable them to conduct themselves in an upright manner in their dealings with God and Man. This is what Jesus meant when He said "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of God" Matthew 5:3.

That's more of a question for an english major than religion. You are going to get a lot of answers like "ATHEISTS!!" or "People who don't follow their religion correctly, like Christians" which isn't what you want.
