Yes. Because they have a spine that is too long.

No, it is not NORMAL! It comes from inherited problems that puppy mills and backyard breeders do not pay any attention to or worry about. They just breed for the money.

While any dog or Dachshund can injure their backs, the Dachshunds that have the most trouble are those poorly bred ones. They have disc disease and will most likely go down in the back by the time they are age 5. If a dog hasn't gone down by then, odds are much in favor that it does not have disc disease and will live a full and normal life.

Dachshunds are notorious for acquiring Interveteberal Disk Disease, which can cause them loss of movement in the back legs. This happens because of their long backs, and lack of support. I have an older dachshund that suffered from IDD, but he has since recovered. I do not know if it is common to recover so quickly, or at all, but I do know that it is a serious condition that needs to be looked at by a vet. The sooner, the better.

yes it is. i had a little dashund a few yrs ago and he spotted a bird nest lodged between the deck boards so he started digging at it and kept this up most of the day,as they tend to have a one track hunting mind. any way after pulling him away and removing the nest he put his back out from going back every time i wasn't watching him and then he would fall over and couldn't move his back legs, then after a few mins he got up, then fell over again. i called the vet and the xrays showed he had slipped a disk in his long back just from trying to get at the nest. you have to watch them for back problems and the littlest thing can injure it. do not let him jump,or dig or do anything that puts stress on his back other than normal walking and easy play.

Here let me spell it for you.
Dachshunds.
Pronounced doxunds.
If you have any problems with limping, ouching, dragging...then it's off to the vets immediately.
They are prone to it because of jumping off furniture, doing stairs etc. Their backs can't do the rounding needed for stairs, and the impact from jumping causes problems. The answer to your brief question is Yes.

dachshunds are very suseptable to back problems due to their elongated spine. make sure to try and keep them from going up the stairs or jumping on things like a chair or couch becaues it can start damaging their spine. I am not sure if they have leg problems but they do have teeth problems. If not maintained properly they can start loosing teeth at a young age. keep then away from rocks and or hard things because they like to chew on them and it ruins their teeth.

Yes, it is normal due to their longer bodies. Not unusual for them to slip discs in their backs at all. Proper weight management is critical for this breed. An over weight doxie is looking at the potential for more back trouble than one of good weight.

Seems like it is.
My in-laws had dachunds for a long time. Sweet dogs.
However, they had back problems.
But not too bad if they do not get too fat. My in-laws spoil their dogs with "treats" and table scraps as treats and they got too fat. The vet said their dogs were overweight and needed to lose weight. They had back problems when they were in that overweight condition.

Oh yes.
Dachshunds are known for having back and joint issues especially as they get older.
If you think you're dog may be suffering from one of these take it to the vet!
