Classic 1911 hick up. HP's generally don't do well in them. Stick with the Ball ammo. Generally it's not ok to seat the bullet less than what your manual states. You could be opening yourself up to a whole bunch of problems and unsafe conditions depending on just how radical a change your talking about. Reloading ammo is an exercise in experimentation. Don't be in such a hurry. It's about quality first not quantity. Hopefully you have a current re-loaders manual. READ IT. If you don't have one then I strongly urge you to get one. Your safety depends on it. Just do the standard 10% below the recommended charge of powder and work it up from there. Stick with what works best for the powder and bullet your using. As for self defense loads verses target loads your manual will show you the difference in charges andvelocityy. These are helpful but I'd just figure out what I wanted to use and then stick with it for target and self defense.

For TARGET PRACTICE I have found American Eagle (which is made by Federal so you know it's good) for $9.99/box of 50. I have shot the Winchester 9mm from WalMart and had ALOT of trouble with it. See, I shot 100 rounds of Blazer through my Baby Eagle with absolutely no problems. The I switched over to Winchester because of their name and that's when I started having problems. I fired 73 rounds at the range one day and out of that I had 3 jams and 1 failure to fire. I figured my pistol needed a good cleaning so I cleaned and took it to the range again. This time I shot just around 120 rounds of Winchester and had about 4 jams and 2 or 3 failures to fire. Bad right? So this last time I take it out to the range with a good cleaning and 2 boxes of American Eagle Ammunition. Not only did I not have any problems with this ammunitition I also found it to be more accurate out of my handgun. That's all I have to say about the target practice part.

On to the SELF-DEFENSE ammunition. I have read about Federal Hydra-Shock performing extremely well for home and self defense. Also, another round that isn't produced anymore because of its lethality is the Black Talon Ammo from Winchester. This bullet immediately fragments into many pieces slicing its way through the body hit vital organs. You can still by Black Talon off of www.gunbroker.com.

For defensive use, Federal's 9BP load, a 115 JHP has a very good record of one shot stops. You need to shoot a few boxes to make sure your pistol is reliable and find out what accuracy you will be getting.

For plinking, any cheap 9 mm FMJ will work, but you need to shoot some of your carry ammo frequently as well, or at least some ammo that has the same bullet weight and velocity as your carry ammo.

I reload all my target ammo now but I used to use Winchester USA ammo when I was buying it. If your local Wal Mart stocks it you can get a 100 round value box cheaper than most other ammo. If you shoot a lot than reloading is the way to go. You can get a Lee progessive press that does a good job for a low cost and it will pay for itself in about 1000 rounds. For personal defense I currently use Winchester silvertip ammo. I have used Federal Hydra shock in the past and would use it again.

It is best to stay away from any ammo that does not come loaded in brass or nickel plated casings. For practice, target shooting or plinking any ball 9mm ammo will do. For defensive purposes it is critical to select a good quality jacked hollow point in 115 to 127 grain for your 9mm. Federal, Cor Bon, Winchester, Remington & Gold Dot all load good defensive ammo. For defense against home invaders consider Glazier type pre-fragmented ammo which won't go through dry wall endangering a loved one sleeping in the next bedroom. Stay away from subsonic, 147 grain rounds in 9mm for defense. The 9mm needs speed, not bulk, to work reliably.

Best.

For target pratice use the CCI Blazer which can be as cheap as $7/50. For self defense, I would use something like the 147gr. HP.
