my son has a half australian shepherd and half border collie pup. We live in town and since everyone says these dogs need lots of exercise what kind do you reccomend? We also have limited space.

Running is one of the best ways. If you have a yard, just throw a ball around the yard for it. If not, sometimes you can use a nearby school's field since usually gated, just keep her on a long line just in case.

Frisbee is also a good exercise and a lot of dogs like yours excel at these kinds of sports.

Walking is also a good way to get exercise. The more you walk, the dog will gain stamina and endurance.

Check around your area. Some places offer classes of sorts that can train dogs to do "jobs" such as learning to herd sheep. Also check aroudn to see if there is any agility courses or flyball training available.

Long walks, trips to the dog park, and fetching tennis balls are all good. If there are nearby hiking trails that allow dogs, go for hikes. Jogging and cycling (see links) are good if the pup is old enough for extended running (call the vet and ask). Don't forget about mental exercise and socialization. Most towns have group training classes for pups and their owners.

Both of those breeds excel at agility and fly ball. Would it be possible for you to look for a local club to join? Daily walks / jogs are great ways to exercise any dog. I wouldn't recommend dog parks until you have complete VOICE control of your dog. Too many ppl take out of control animals to dog parks and it's just a huge incident waiting to happen. (IMHO) You could take the dog to a field on a long line and throw a ball for a good game of fetch. And some communities offer herding clubs for people to train their dogs in what they were bred to do, which is a great form of exercise. :-) Another thought... a flirt pole. Most dogs LOVE these and they're very easy to use in exercise, training and play time.

Daily walks! I take my very high energy Doberman rollerblading. I put a harness on her and she pulls me and just LOVES it! Bicycle works good too. For the days that the weather is too bad to go outside for anything more than potty breaks, a treadmill works great! They are NOT just for fighting dogs!

take the pup to a dog park, they can run around and you can throw the ball so then the pup gets tired by the time she/he gets home.

if the pup is still very young remember not to exercise too much until the pup is older or else your little pup can bocome injured.

Just bike ride about 10 or 15mins. i did that with my puppy yesterday, and she was so beat when she got home. cause she has a lot of enerygy, and a regular walk doesnt help. so take that dog on a bike ride and he'll be really tired.

You never know with mixed breeds. Almost all of them are completely different.

+ you could let them run around in your local park.
+ you could take it for a swim in a lake if theres one near you.
+ if theres one near you, you could take it to agility courses. (jumping fences)
+ buy a teadmill :-)
