I think, the true nature of the soul is consciousness or awareness that acts as a witness to whatever is happening in the being. So if the mind did not dream at night, the soul just makes the being aware of the fact that there was no dreaming at night and this communication can not be considered a communication like we communicate with each other through our emotions and thoughts. So I will say that soul does not have emotions to communicate with the mind and it communicates directly with the being through witnessing or the consciousness or the awareness.

animals cannot talk, and therefore have no capability to hurt the emotions. They are therefore completely innocent, although they share in death. It is our souls which need the saving, not the animals'. Some animals are amazing. Kids too.
(Ooh, I like THIS definition!!!) (of "soul"---actually the etymology of the word. I find that when you dig up the oldest meaning, you get an entirely different slant on words.)
"Sometimes said to mean originally "coming from or belonging to the sea," because that was supposed to be the stopping place of the soul before birth or after death."
It also has a basic meaning: "breath", which all living creatures own.

No, it just means that one is capable of emotion, intelligence and can communicate.
Your cats can do that, although with somewhat less sophistication than us sapiens.
No souls are needed to account for any of this.
Soul is imaginary, except in the case of Marvin Gaye.

All animals have a "spirit", which gives them the ability to learn, love, communicate, and gives them limited intelligence, but their spirits are mortal. When the animal dies, and is buried it returns to dust.
Only mankind is imbued with a spirit AND a soul which ARE immortal. Mankind's spirit and soul NEVER die.

No, there is no such thing as a soul - we're just particularly smart animals, and pretty much all our abilities are found in other animals to some degree.
