We do not attack Xians. We attack their self-righteous attempts at the theocratization of the world

First of all, please do not treat atheists as though they were all alike. Not all atheists "bash" Christianity. Quite a many, myself included, find a lot of value in Christianity, as well as in other world religions. Not to mention that there are plenty of atheists raised in non-Christian cultures, who aren't primarily concerned with Christianity in the first placed.

You're still right though, there are plenty of atheists, especially on the internet, who DO bash Christianity. And I think the main reason behind this is that they want to look smart. It gratifies a very basic human desire, to feel good about oneself. Some atheists feel like they're so much better than others, that they are entitled to bully Christians and ridicule them. I think it really is as simple as that for many atheists.

But there is a big difference between making fun of Christianity, and criticizing it. I think there's a lot wrong with Christianity - morally and intellectually. I'd be lying if I said I didn't. But I do try to be fair about my criticisms. I think, for example, that Christianity is responsible for a lot of oppression against women. But I also know that patriarchy is much older and much more deeply established than Christianity, and that it's not impossible to rid Christianity of its sexism. I also think that the doctrine of creation ex nihilo (God made the universe out of nothing) is badly flawed, even absurd. But I'm willing to listen to Christians' defense of this doctrine, to see if it makes some sense.

And you're right that plenty of atheists do need to get a life. But an atheist could make the same criticism of a Christian missionary. They spend all THEIR time trying to get other people to accept their beliefs. Often they do so by ridiculing the "superstitions" of the native religion. So what motivates Christian missionaries? I think it's that they sincerely believe that others will be improved if they come to accept Christ. It's the same with a lot of atheists. A lot of people believe that religious intolerance will end and scientific discovery will begin in earnest if we reject the idea of the supernatural. Maybe that's true; maybe it's not. But I think that's what motivates a lot of atheists.

Well, one may ask back what do YOU hope to get by bashing atheists?

I have seen transgressions from both sides here, so it is not as though the Christian side is "turning the other cheek".

Most of the atheists I have met do not want to be told that they will spend eternity, roasting in the fires of hell, while the "saved" will look down on them from heaven and laugh.

I actually read that from a poster here in R&S who claimed to be a "compassionate Christian".

I don't, although I don't feel I have a right to say I'm bi or atheist because I will be attacked for it. Yes they are foolish, both sides. I hide it is what I do. People who don't accept me being atheist are not worth telling. They are foolish coming here trying to change people with there remarks. I come here trying to answer truthfully and what I think is the right thing to do. They find fun in doing this to religious people, what a dull way of having fun.

My existence does not revolve around here! i'm working for a level and that i admire spending time with my infant nephews and so on, I come at here in line with danger a pair of hours an afternoon, in many cases interior the morning on a similar time as i'm making waiting. Disagreeing with and declaring the failings on your faith isn't bashing

Both parties are guilty and it doesn't matter who started it. Many Christians seem to have a goal of converting anyone who doesn't follow their faith. If people could just accept that everyone has different beliefs and are entitled to behold those beliefs without fear of harassment or judgment then this would would be a better place.

We're not here to bash Christians. There are Christians who seek to limit our freedom to NOT be Christian.

Also, Christians, by nature of being Christian, seek to "save" (read: convert) people. Being a non-Christian, I've had many Christians try to convert me...it gets old. Fast.

I'm here to try to help clear up misconceptions about atheists and other non-Christians, because there seems to be a widespread assumption that we're all evil, immoral people.

I mean all the following with kindness:
Attack? You think that probing questions, strong intellectual challenges, and clever witticisms that poke at unsubstantiated belief s are attacks?

What do we hope to gain? We hope to both challenge and be entertained. It's unfortunate that you allow yourselves to be self-deluded, but as long as you do, you should get used to the fact that empirically-minded, rational, secularists may find you amusing.

Get a life? We have this one life, thank you very much. Weren't you hoping for a life after this one? Methinks it should be you who needs to get a life.

Different atheists have different motivations. Although from my experience with atheist friends they tend to be doing the same as many Christians do, which is try to convert people to their own point of view in the hope of "saving" them from their ignorance.

Religion - especially Christianity - constantly interferes in the lives of everyone, including non-believers', and including mine.

It seeks to restrict what I may do, say, read and watch, and when and where I may do it. It limits the progress of science and medicine; it teaches ludicrous fantasies to children as truth, and terrifies young, vulnerable and timid people with threats of hell.

Religion interferes in reproductive rights, trading, medicine, entertainment, law, politics, sexuality, international relations and humanitarian aid. And it starts wars and kills people.

Just stop all that meddling and I'll leave it alone.

Coming from the person who asked 'how to eradicate atheism'? You must be fairly well acquainted with both the pot and the kettle by this point.

I can't figure out if this is ironic, moronic, or just sad.
