I have heard it said both ways.
I think you are right Thor. I picked it up as a bad habbit. And, while I have your attention, did you know that there are some sects of Asatru that welcome Atheists into the kindred? (The Kin i am getting involved in (Great Oak Kindred) welcomes them as warmly as a normal Asatruar.)
I think I only like " I am Asatru" becuse I think it sounds better then Asatruar

btw, im not being a smartass here, but there are a few 'asatruar' on this board who might unnessisarily pick holes in your questions and answers because of this,... when referring to yourself with our religion, we usually say 'i am asatruar', asatru is simply the name of the faith :) i 'think' its something like 'i am buddhism, or i am christianity', and its changed to 'i am buddhist, or i am christian', Hail.

The term Asatru (literally, being true to the Æsir or Germanic deities) is the most used term for the modern reconstructed forms of the magical polytheistic religions of the German and Scandinavian people that have appeared in Europe and North America since the 1960s.
That good for yaz? ;)

After reading the other answers here.. The textbook stuff is there "True to the Aesir" The Icelandic/Scandanavian roots and all that important stuff.. and some good fun levity thrown in. (made up in the 60's?) For me Asatru is a reconnection to the ancestoral beginnings of my family line back to the only God taking credit for giving my folk life, Odin. It is about living in today's world and not a recon. (No offense to the Recon folk I have respect for your preserving efforts too) If we are going to see Asatru into a future, we need to live for the future and the Aesir and Vanir have as meaningful a place there as they did in the past. In our multicultural world we are losing sight of our past. All cultures and peoples are in serious danger in that respect because none of us can afford to lose our heritage. It is all too valuable. Asatru reconnects me to who I am and where I came from. It connects me to my soul and grounds me spiritually.

Good question, Tyr... I starred it for the others on my contact list. I'm interested in what some of them think as I have a couple of Atheists and, well, I don't know that you'd call them Christian.... lol I know of one that is considered a Heretic lol =)
