Honestly the best thing to get rid of fleas is advantage. I'm guessing you have pets...so yeah, ,it's a bit expensive in the beginning (around $30 per application) but after one or maybe 2 applications you should be rid of the fleas. I had a cat and a dog when I had flea problems...my cat was allergic to fleas (of all things) so I had to get rid of them immediately. She was losing her hair. I took her to the vet, they gave me the advantage stuff....got three applications for the dog (4 lb incredibly cute chihuahua) and 3 for the cat and I noticed a difference within days. I continued for the three months just because I wanted to make sure they were gone for good. But, seriously it's noticeable in days.

Home remedies from what I've seen are slow actors. I'd bite the bullet and get the good stuff. The one that's put on his skin in 3 places that soaks in. Those fleas can invade your house then you'll wish you'd stopped them sooner. If it's an ouside dog, you'll have to de-flea your yard also. Relieving their itching? The only thing that's helped my dog is a shot or prescription pill. He gets the itchies every year from swimming in OH yukky waters. And it's difficult to get rid of. and miserable for the dog while he itches. You'll want to get all of this stopped ASAP.

For the carpet use Borax--sprinkle it on like you would carpet fresh--let it sit for a while (I let it set overnite) and vacume--something in the Borax dries the fleas and kills them. I do use Frontline on the dogs--a tad pricey but I've found that 1 application at the beginning of flea season takes care of things ( I have 4 dogs and the cost is $100--but this works for 4-6 mos.) As for the yard--I really don't know--we have a farm and I have guinea hens and they eat anything that remotely resembles an insect--we haven't had fleas outside since getting them (we have 4--1 rooster and 3 hens). Not much help here--but maybe the Borax on the carpet will help.

I like revolution for the dog....but barring that, go to a garden store and get Sevin (seven??) brand garden dust. If you read the label it is labeled safe to put animals back in the area immediately after treatment, and it's even labeled safe to use on your animals, not that I'm too sure I'd want to dust my dog down with it.... I have checked some of the off brand equivalents, and haven't found one labeled safe for use, so I would use the brand name. Dust the yard thoroughly with sevin and you can do you house as well. Let it sit most of the day, then vaccuum. You may need to repeat, although I believe there is a carpet spray that has ovitrol in it, which is supposed to kill unhatched flea eggs that you could use after the dusting. I would want to do the dusting when you can be gone for the day, so you don't have to track through it all the time.

Carpet - vaccuum with a brand new bag, and throw out the bag after you vaccum. Get under furniture, in between pillows, everywhere. You will have to vaccuum daily for a while at least. If that doesnt work, move your pets and everyone else out and have the place bombed professionally. Places that do that usually have some sort of guarantee if they dont get all the fleas the first time.
The dogs - frontline. The one that is only available at your vet. It kills fleas after a period of time when they land on your dog.
The yard - no way.
Don't forget to vaccum your car too if the dogs go in there!

diatamacious earth. It's used for swimming pool filter media, comes in 25# boxes from Home Depot. Put some in a folded cardboard and blow it all over the yard using an air compressor and nozzle. It works by cutting up the soft bodies of the bugs and causes them to dehydrate. Works on ants too. Rub some dust into the dog's hair and blow it inside the house. Don't breath it. Costs about $25 for the big box. I'm not sure of the spelling, it's made of diatoms..tiny sea creatures. Non toxic.

Yeah, stuff from stores does not work. Pet stores aren't licensed to sell the proper chemicals for flea treatment - anything you find in store is just going to be a basic pesticide that you can't expect to work.
You need veterinary treatment, because it actually works. Frontline, Advantage or Revolution for the dogs, and a spray for the house.
Believe me when I say home remedies would only be a further waste of your time and money!

Well, if you really love your pets, you would pay a lot of money to save them, if you don't, then your animals could get lethargic and die. I hope you stay smart and not mess around with home remedies, go to your vet and explain that your house, dog , and yard has a lot of fleas on it and in it, then they will give you medicine for your dog and give you good recommendation for the yard and house. Good luck.

The only thing I've found that works is to fleabomb your place, then air it well (for at least two hours). Vacumn and sweep. Then put Advantage on your pet.
We tried flea sprays and collars, etc. The infestation only got worse. The above is the only way we ended it.

first take them a bath use flea shampoo, put on flea collar after u dry them of don't get collar wet. i picked them off my dog(shorthair) put them in apple vinegar or toilet. vacuum good &alot. wash every thing they sleep on hottest water. Brewer yeast tabs work good to it has garlic in it . i also use a lint brush on furniture bedding. On dog, IMO i don't trust the chemicals in the stuff u put on dogs. someone in answers said to put salt on carpet, furniture then vacum next day throw away bag. GOOD LUCK!
