Rabies is required BY LAW. In EVERY state. Rabies is a public health risk.

The distemper combo vaccine is your choice. You can get it or not. It covers viruses like Parvo and distemper. Both are expensive to treat and often fatal. Distemper is not required before the rabies vaccine. Some vets and boarding kennels require it before certain services.

Your FIRST rabies vaccine is only good for ONE year.

Rabies is 100% mandatory everywhere. Most vaccines are 2 or 3 yr vaccines, so you should be able to get it done every 3 years. Your vet may want you to get one rabies vaccine now, and another one in a year, but after that you should be able to skip years in between.

He should have at least one puppy distemper vaccine (distemper, parainfluenze, parvo, etc) while he is still young. If he is completely unvaccinated for this disease, he is at a very large risk for contracting some of the nastiest things he can get. These illnesses can kill a puppy or a very old dog. This distemper vaccine can be done every other year, or every 2 years, depending on your vet's recommendation and what kind of vaccine he uses.

Other that that, he just needs a yearly heartworm test. This is a cheap and simple blood draw, and should be done yearly, regardless of circumstances. Heartworm comes from mostquitos, and mosquitos can bite your pet at any time, especially given how mild the weather has been lately.

Talk to your vet and make sure that this is ok with him. Most vets understand if you want to do the 'bare minimum' vaccination style.

It is important that the puppy doesn't get dehydrated. Using an eye dropper take chicken, turkey, beef or pork broth and drop a small amount in the puppy's mouth about every 15 minutes three or four times and then try this again in a few hours. You could put the broth in a bowl and see if the puppy lops it up. Hopefully some of the fat in the soup will help ease out some food the vet thinks the dog shouldn't have been consumed and supply liquid. You can start with water ASAP but the soup broth is protein. If your puppy is drinking water than this not necessary. Ask the vet when the medicine is supposed to kick in and what else should you do? Good luck!

Your puppy should have gotten a distemper/parvo vaccination at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks of age and a rabies vaccination any time after.

A dog does NOT have to have had any vaccinations before getting a rabies vaccination.

Go see your vet as it is different in every country and you didn't say where you are from. Otherwise you will get mixed answers. As there are different diseases in each country.
There is no need to vaccinate for rabies in Australia be careful when you say everywhere

The American Animal Hospital Association put their recommendation online.

This is what all 27 vet schools in the U.S. follow.
Be sure to look up the studies on duration of immunity for the vaccines. There's a lot to learn and you vet won't tell you.

All shots are recommended, however Rabies is MANDATORY. You'll get your county license only after the rabies vac. The question is really about when he needs his boosters and their is a variety of information and opinions on that.

He needs the distemper and the parvo shots ASAP. you do not want to wait when it comes to getting the parvo shot because if he picks up Parvo, he could die.
The rabies shot is absolutely mandatory.
