I went to the Sleep America and bought their lowest end mattress and they threw in the box spring. It is called Chiro something, and has a pillow top. It was about $600.00 and I think it's great!
The best mattress for the money is the least expensive one that you can put money under!

It really depends on what you like. I sleep on a wool & cotton futon mattress (on a slat bed - no box spring needed). It's nice and firm, breathes so I don't get all sweaty, is warm in winter and cool in summer, and doesn't contain all the harmful chemicals found in regular mattresses.

A high density foamy, best sleeping surface ever invented and cheap. Make sure it's 4inches thick.
