This typical pit bull attack happened 7 hours ago. What would you do if this happened in your house? If you had a gun would you shoot the pit? Would you have a pit if you had a baby in the house?

BALTIMORE -- A 17-month-old boy is recovering after a vicious assault by a pit bull in southeast Baltimore.
The dog, which neighbors said was a family pet, attacked the child inside his home around 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of Newcomb Way.
The child was bitten in the face, suffering deep cuts along
his nose and mouth, officials said.
Police said that the boy's father was also injured while pulling the dog off him.

When I lived in Las Cruces, NM which is about 40 miles from El Paso, TX and Juarez, MX there was a 6 month old baby boy that was attacked by a pit bull while sleeping in a play pen The dog chewed off the baby's genitals and he almost died. Needless to say, he had to undergo extensive surgery. I moved before I could learn of the results but I'm sure they were horrendous. Tell me what a 6 mo. old baby in a play pen could have done to deserve this? I don't trust pit bulls after hearing of many attacks, and I never will. It is up to the owner to train the dog to not be aggressive.

Pits get a bad rap, breeding and training have a lot to do with how the dog acts. Just because the dog is a pit bull doesn't mean it will will attack. And what exactly is a typical attack? Does the article say what happened prior to the attack? Any dog will bite if provoked or threatened, even by a child.
I once had the misfortune to see the aftermath of an attack on a 2 year old by a golden retriever. Yes, the lovable family pet ripped the skin off of the kids head.
With that said, I would kill my dog (a boxer) or any dog if they bit my kids intentionally.

You never get sick of this, do you?
If any of my dogs had attacked a child (or an adult for that matter) unprovoked, I would have the dog humanely euthanized. However, I am curious as to the details of the attack. Was the child interacting with the dog unattended? Where were the parents when the child was with the dog? Rule #1 for dog owners of any breed is NEVER leave your child alone with any dog. ...not even to answer the phone or lock the door. Incidents like this take a split second to happen, and I'm willing to bet that Dad had stepped away when the child was hurt. Any dog (as in, not just pit bulls) can bite a prodding, poking, pulling toddler, which is why dog owners that are also parents have to be extra vigilant. Pit Bulls are actually known for being patient with children.
EDIT: It's not desperation, it's fact. You're right, a chihuahua bite isn't newsworthy...so we don't hear about them, even though their bite records are much much much higher than those of Pit Bulls, or any large breed dog. The media sensationalizes these stories because Pits are the monsters-of-the-moment...much like GSDs in the 80s and Dobermans in the 90s. The media will label any large breed dog as a "pit bull" and in many cases, they are wrong. A month ago, I read a story about a Pit Bull attacking a woman and her child. The dog was said to be 130 pounds. No Pit Bull breed generally exceeds 80 pounds (at the highest)....100 pounds being extremely rare and indicative of obesity. Strange huh.....and they didn't show any pictures of the dog either....wonder why? Probably because it wasn't a pit bull...and showing that would have made it less newsworthy.

um ok probably the worst thing you could do would to be to discharge a firearm inside the home while the dog is wrapped up with the child, i dont care how "good" of a shot you think you are it would be incredibly easy to hit the child. and yeah it is the medias fault, a lot of kids probably got attacked by a dog today but since it wasnt a pit its not news worthy my sister got bit pretty bad on the hand and face by a chocolate lab a few years ago but you didnt see the news cameras there. people should be more vigilant with their children, if the dog attacked a stranger it would considered the owners fault, so if it attacks a family member why is it not the owners fault still? the news story is also totally incomplete not giving any real information about the circumstances. its impossible to lay total blame on the dog here. get a grip, and im not even a pit owner so its not like im biased in their favor

I wanted to do shoot my niece's lab did the same thing to her son, and hey guess what they did not put that in the news ether. Do you think it was becasue labs are "good family dogs". Dude hate to tell you this but it happens a 110 times everyday and you only hear about the pit bulls. As I have pointed out in the past a number of AC officers all over the US own pit bulls. The ASPCA dose not support bsl and the study 99% of people quote showing pits as the bad dog says thier figures are swrong and should not be used. Do not know if you saw it but I posted on another question about PIT BULL day the only dog that bite anyone was a chihuahua. He bite his owner, he also owns a pit bull, bad enought to cause him to have stiches. Guess he should have left his mean dog at home.

And yet you took the time to edit the report instead of simply posting a link and didn't bother to post the link at the end. Maybe you should find better things to do with your time than persecuting pit bulls and trying to stir up problems on yahoo.
And no I wouldn't shoot my dog because the situation would never come up. I don't leave children around animals unattended and I make sure every ANIMAL that will be around children knows that kids are to be tolerated or avoided. Cats, dogs I don't care which it is.
*add* A small breed biting isn't newsworthy but it can still do physical harm.

I wouldn't shoot the dog. That's mean.
I wouldn't keep a dog with a kid without carefully watching either.
The dog probably has its reasons. Besides, let's not discriminate against pitbulls, I happen to know a few that are the gentlest dogs in the world. Any dog could have done this.
EDIT: The reason people are always doing this to pitbulls is because their name sounds mean and vicious, and they don't look too pretty.
However, I think they're wonderful dogs. Besides, there must have been some part in his training that they didn't go through well enough for him to act like this. The dog depends on its owner, and when the owner screws up, the dog screws up. Like I said earlier, any dog could've done this.

You know something, I am so sick and tired of people downing on a PITBULL! Yes, I would get rid of the dog. Kill it in a humane way. put it to sleep. I own a PITBULL and she is the best dog in the world. She loves my 4 kids and protects them with everything she has! When my last child was born she loved him like he was hers. She kissed and always wanted to be by his side. People make pits out to be all bad but what about little dogs, they can be just as mean. A DOG CANT HELP HOW ITS RAISED!!! Stop blaming the animals and start blaming the owners!

Can't answer the question right now, still trying to find the pit bull in the web site kickrocks54 posted.
Phew, found it
I have to say, I thought I new my dogs. That was surprisingly difficult.
The answer to your question: Yes, Yes and Yes. Any dog for that matter. My philosphy is that there are "no bad dogs, just bad owners". But when it comes to my kids. That goes out the door.
