Can anyone give me specifics as to why these two taxes differ?
Also, isn't there something about "federalism" that says the federal government can't take money from the state taxes?

Any help would be awesome : )!
And if you have the sources for the information, that'd be great too!

Fedeal taxes are paid to the federal government. State taxes are paid to the state. They differ because they are different taxes, with different rules, assessed by and paid to different levels of government.

Simple.

Federal taxes are levied by the Federal Government.

State taxes are levied by State Governments.
