Internet TAX Freedom Act has been introduced into Congress. You better get on line and ask your rep. what is going on?

bostonianismo is MOSTLY correct. He is wrong about SALES taxes. The seller is only required to COLLECT taxes is they have a nexus in the state to which the item is shipped. The buyer is required to PAY the taxes in any case. This is usually called a use tax and is the least enforced tax in the history of taxation.

The act was signed into law in 1998. It was originally due to expire in 2001 but has been extended twice. It's up for review and possible extension again as it will expire next month if Congress doesn't act.

All it did was prohibit taxes on internet access and limit the levy of sales taxes to states where an internet-based seller has a nexus.
