faith that is genuine will show itself in good works.
"Faith without works is dead." Faith that isn't coupled with good works is a dead faith i.e. it won't lead to life but death.
The bible says in many passages:
- "by their fruit [work] you shall know them"
- 1 John is all about love in action
- "You are the salt of the earth, if the salt loses it's saltiness it is only good to be thrown out and trampled underfoot" as Jesus said
- Galatians 5 shows the fruits of the spirit.
I hope you find the answers you're looking for.

The expression “faith alone” is not found anywhere in the Bible’s original Hebrew or Greek texts. Martin Luther, the reformer of the 16th century, had a translation of the Bible made, and even did some of it himself. But it was a selective translation, leaving out books Luther didn't agree with. Luther omitted from the New Testament the Letter to the Hebrews and the Letter of James. The latter states that faith without good works is dead, and Luther claimed that faith alone was necessary for salvation. Today, Lutherans say the reason they can do any good work is because "God loves us first in grace.” That’s what the Lutherans mean by “grace alone,” “They don’t mean grace without anything else, but they mean grace at the center of everything. God "alone" knows each person’s heart and how each one has responded to God’s grace. Apostle James writes that faith without works is dead (James 2:17). Every Catholic and Lutheran Christian ought to wake up thanking God for the grace they’ve received in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We respond to that gift with gratitude.

Let me try to explain it the way it was explained to me. I'm pretty sure you're getting this from the book of James, right? Okay.
Faith without works is dead. Think of a dead body. It just kinda lies there stinking, right? It can't do anything. If it was alive, though, that body would be able to walk, talk, sing, live and breathe. That passage in James means that if our faith in God is "alive" - meaning, if we truly believe in Jesus Christ as our saviour - we will work for God. We will read our Bibles and pray, we will tell others about Jesus, we will try to apply the principles in the Bible to our lives and live like God wants us to live. If, however, our faith is "dead" - meaning, if we don't really believe in Jesus - then we won't work for God. There will be no "fruit", no evidence of our faith that others can see.
James also says, "Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works." Did you catch that? I will show you my faith BY my works. We don't work in order to be saved - we work *because* we are saved. So we are saved through faith (the Bible also says that even that saving faith comes from God and not us - so we truly don't do much of anything! God is so good to us! He saves freely), and our faith is seen in the good things we do.
I hope that made sense!

The act of salvation is based on faith in Christ alone and by HIS grace, are we saved. One who says they are saved and does not NATURALLY respond as a RESULT of their salvation, is not really saved, because it is a Natural RESULT to act charitable and kind and loving because of your being born again and changed. SALVATION itself is thru FAITH ONLY IN CHRIST, as you can be charitable and kind, but if you are not saved by the grace of Jesus in salvation through your FAITH, it means NOTHING! Faith without works is dead because you are not naturally responding in the result of your new being, therefore, not having faith that is real.
Faith is an actual state of being.

If we are saved by grace shouldn't we look for it?
Prov 8:30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
32 Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
33 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
35 For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. ~KJV

Your saved by faith alone but you have to "activate" you faith...
like your average comes from your test grades but you need to study to "activate" good test grades...
ok i know, corny example but working through grace out of love is what makes faith.... its the definition, you need to do it in order to have faith.

The best analogy I ever saw of this was someone took scales. They placed something really heavy on one and called it "salvation". Then they added small things to the other side to symbolize works. But they could not add enough to make it even. So after all of the works, they added something to symbolize Christ. It is after all we can DO that we are saved. Works alone can not save us, hence the Saviour. But simply believing is not enough either.
EDIT: Is your edit for me? Because if it is, you didn't clearly read my answer. I didn't say we are saved by works alone. I said we are saved by grace after all we can do.

We are saved by the faith in an action we are supposed to bear the image of the unseen god.

Galatians 2:16
knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.
Romans 3:28
Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.

actually what is says is:
For it is by GRACE you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—
Eph. 2:8
Grace and Faith both being a gift of God.
