It does not stand for anything.

Every major airport in the world has to have a unique 3 - letter code so that pilots and air traffic controllers can identify any airport in the world, which allows for convenient and practical communication.

Examples of codes of the world's major airports:
Los Angeles -- LAX
Las Vegas -- LAS
Atlanta -- ATL
New York -- JFK
Amsterdam -- AMS
Milan -- MXP
Paris -- CDG

So sometimes the code reflects the city's name, sometimes it doesn't. It has nothing to do with "international" as suggested by some other answers, otherwise every international airport would end with an X.

ICAO is the world body that regulates the codes, and makes sure there are no duplicates. It seems logical that L and A come from Los Angeles, and they had to add a third letter to keep the code unique.

Lax Airport Meaning

The X alone doesn't mean anything. everyone knows what LAX means, just as most know that PDX means Portland and IAH means Houston. Additionally, anything that starts with a "Y" means Canada. How do they get Y out of Canada? There is a famous song by Rush called YYZ, which is Toronto's airport.

I work at LAX. Every air"line" in the world must have two letters, for example AA = American Airlines, but HP is for America West. So the letters do not have to stand for anything. Sometimes it just seems like they do. Every air"port" in the world must have three letters. And its the same as airlines, they do not necessarily have to stand for anything. The X means nothing, they just needed three letters and chose the X.
