Jacob was tricked into marrying Leah, Rachel's older sister. He did eventually marry Rachel.
As for the promised land:
God gave Abraham and his family the Land of Israel as a unique homeland where his descendants are supposed to create the nation that's the model for the world.
The Jewish people will only live and prosper in their homeland if they maintain their relationship with God and carry on the mission of Abraham:
It will be that if you hearken to My commandments that I command you today...then I shall provide rain for your land in its proper time...that you may gather your grain, your wine and your oil...and you will eat and be satisfied. Beware for yourselves, lest your heart be seduced and you go astray...the ground will not yield its produce and you will be swiftly banished from the goodly land that God gives you. (Deut. 11: 13-17)
Throughout the early part of the Bible, God is constantly talking about giving the Jewish people the Land of Israel and reaffirming that commitment.
Virtually every nation in the world bases its claim to its land on conquest. The Jewish people base their claim on God's promise. It is a moral claim because God is God and God is by definition truth, and God is by definition morality. God gave the Jewish people the Land of Israel. Without that, the only claim the modern State of Israel can make is it is stronger and was able to win all its wars with the Arabs.
This is an extremely important point that is often lost on modern Israeli politicians and those who seek to defend the State of Israel -- which is not a religious state and often far removed from Jewish values -- to realize that the Bible gives the Jews their only moral claim to the land.
And on to Joseph:
His brothers were envious because he was Jacob's favorite son.
I hope this helps:)

Where to begin??? Hmm.... Answer to first query: Are you married? (I am assuming right here that you're a person and don't seem to be but married) If you're married (and are a person) then I am amazed at this question. There is a intent why guys consider that they're more potent and higher than females. BECAUSE WOMEN LET THEM THINK THIS!!!! When a spouse wishes some thing her husband to do, we're very ready of LETTING our husbands consider it used to be all his thought. And no, this isn't how a holy guy and his spouse behave. This is how a person and spouse behave. Have you ever been within the presence of a spouse who used to be mad at her husband??? Scary. ALMOST as horrifying as p1ssing off G-d. Answer approximately Ishmael: Nowhere within the Bible does it even come practically calling Ishmael a "Donkey Man". The most effective factor I can consider of to provide an explanation for this mistake is that both A: You had been top whilst you learn that passage... OR B: It used to be now not the Bible that you just learn that bit in. Ishmael is in which Islam is born. Ishmael is to Islam what Isaac is to Christianity, Catholicism, and Judaism. A bridge to Abraham and hence a bridge to G-d. Also, you employ the names that got to them via their moms and dads and the names that the angels given them within the identical sentence. Abraham used to be Abram and Sarai used to be Sarah. To use the names improperly simply is going to exhibit how little the Bible you realize. Leahla1979

Jacob was tricked into marrying Leah. I think that he must have been drunk not to notice that he was with the wrong one on his wedding night...

Abraham was told to leave his family and go to the promised land because God was going to make his children into a nation - Israel - who would be a testimony to the entire earth of God's holiness and goodness. They would need a lot of land to do that.

Joseph's siblings were jealous because he was his father's favourite son. Jacob eventually married Rachel, and he loved her more than Leah and more than his 2 concubines (who were the handmaidens of his 2 wives...talk about a love triangle eh!). And she only had 2 sons. Joseph was her firstborn, and she died giving birth to Benjamin. I imagine that the sight of Benjamin was enough to break Jacob's heart for a while. Anyways, the other reason they were jealous of Joseph was because he had a dream in which all his brothers bowed down before him and honoured him. They kinda hated him, really.

Tell ya what - read the book of Genesis in the Bible. It has all the details of this story - and it's a fascinating story to read!!

Sarah was Abraham's half sister. Even though God told Sarah she would have a boy, she 'gave' her handmaiden, Hagar, to Abraham-A had his first child with Hagar. Eventually, Sarah had her kid, got jealous of Hagar & son so A kicked them out into the desert. Abraham went to 'the Promised Land' b/c God said to. Unfortunately, there was a drought, so A went to Egypt, married Sarah to the Pharaoh; after the Pharaoh conveniently 'dreamt' that God told him to give Sarah back, he threw them, and all the expensive wedding gifts he had given A out so A goes and marries Sarah off again to some desert dwelling king. Same thing happens. Still, when he went to get The Promised Land', he had to fight battles to rid the area of already existing habitants.
Joseph's brothers were jealous b/c he was clearly the favorite by his father and they believed he would be the one to inherit everything. Back then, inheritence was life & death. BTW, Joseph ended up marrying both Rachel and Leah and gained two concubines out of the wives' jealousy.

1.Was tricked into marrying Lia the older daughter of Labon.
2.He went to promised land because of his faith in God. Abraham was chosen by God to be the branch from where Jesus, the Saviour of makind, would come from. Should Abraham not desire to accept God's election God would not press him. Just would choose another vessel. The Bible says that Abraham "saw my day and became happy". Meaning that in someway perhaps on a vision or on dream God unveiled hum the coming of the Messiah.
3. Joseph was a favourite son so the other boys didn't like him. Joseph used to boast his being a favourite son. So when he dreamed he would gather everyone and tell his dream. Usually such dreams put Joseph in a remarkable and high position whilst his siblings would be subject to him.
You are welcome.

He was tricked into marrying Leah because she was the oldest.

Because he was to be the father of a new nation.

Joseph's siblings were jealous because he was the favorite and because of a dream he had.

Joseph's siblings were jealous because he was the favored child and he got the coat. He also had this dream that he would rule over his older brothers. So..they were jealous and threw him in a pit..then sold him into Egypt.

The story of Abe and Sarah is kinda X-rated... If you like to believe it. Abraham went to Egypt that at that time was the most powerful nation in the world and the most technologically advanced. The King of Egypt (no name is given) took Sarah (age 80 or so) to bed. God punished the king of Egypt because he believed what Abraham aka the Father of Faith told him about Sarah saying "she is my sister" (Bible Ethics 101). The King of Egypt made Abraham who was an illiterate shepherd of the sheep immensely rich on account of Sarah! (Gen 12:10-20).

A few years later she is over 80 now and still very attractive. So Abraham and Sarah go to the Kingodm of Gerar or Oz for that matter and they do the same trick to King Abimelech. (Gen 20) God comes to Abimelech in a dream on his bed and tells him not to touch Sarah. History repeats itself (It is all in the Bible!) and at the end Abraham gets immensely rich again on account of his atractive wife/sister Sarah (Bible Ethics 101). Abraham had a way of tempting the Devil!

Sarah also has an affair of some sort with God the Father that resulted in her getting pregnant with Isaac! No wonder she was laughing!

Well, there is much more to be said, but I let you figure out the rest... I hate to have my answer deleted!

Hey, one question at a time!

For a woman's perspective on Jacob and his family, I recommend The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. http://www.curledup.com/redtent.htm

Jacob was not in Judaic lands and his wives were not Jews.

After reading the book, I looked up the relevant stories in the bible and was shocked to find the worst of it true:
Dinah's suitor DID agree to have himself AND his male relatives circumcised in order to marry her (not the actions of a "rapist").
Dinah's brothers DID kill her suitor and his family while they were on their sickbeds recovering from the voluntary procedure. Then they took everything of value and ran.
That is when Jacob changed his name to Israel and got his family out of town.
