Mav 88 will do whatever you want it to do and will last as long as a 500 as long as you keep it clean. I upgraded to a SX2 but the Mav 88 does the job just not able to 3.5".

I've been called a "gunsnob" before for my views on the Mossberg maverick 88, but here goes anyhow.

Why not save a bit more money, and buy a shotgun that will last you a lifetime, like a Mossberg 500(The real one, not the downgraded 500 called the maverick 88) Or better yet, get a Remington 870. I guess if you're really desperate for a shotgun and have limited funds, the 88 is ok, but really, why not save a bit more cash and get something your kids will inheret from you one day.The 88 simply isn't built well enough to last that long.

A Mossberg-Maverick Model 88 is best used as a self-defense weapon (18" smoothbore barrel). I owned one back in '93 and it was pretty crude, but it worked. Personally, I velieve that aluminium-framed shotguns are best for combat and steel is best for sport.

Update: You are not a gunsnob. Maverick shotguns use parts that were not good enough for the Mossberg. I have owned both a 88 and 500. The 500 parts are made better. I have the same attitude towards Taurus that you have towards Maverick. Everyone has to set their own standards.

Your "Maverick" Model 88 is the less expensive version of the Mossberg 500. It is not particularly a great gun for Clays, but will do fine in a pinch for Rifled Slugs and Buckshot (If Buckshot is LEGAL to hunt with in your state) with an Improved Choke or a Slug Barrel.........

A Mav 88 is fine for what you asked for.

Addendum to Boker: Nahh, Boker, I don't think you're a gunsnob....I just don't think you've ever really seen a Mav 88 before.

I could toss a pile of parts from both in front of you and you couldn't tell which was which.

Except for the location of the safety, which always seems to be fine with you when you're hawking Remingtons as usual, you couldn't tell a Mav from a Mossy 500 if your life depended on it.

For those that don't know, the ONLY diffs between the two lines are the Mav's come with synthetic stocks (one piece forearms included) to save on the cost of wood, and they come without sling swivels. The safety on the Mossy is on the top and the Mav is on the trigger guard identical to the Remington. Other than that, they are identical and use all identical parts.
