Choose a distribution that meets your needs. To do this, take this short survey about what you want from linux, and it will give you the best matching results. http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/
After it tells you which linux distro will best meet your needs/desires it will tell you where you can get it.
The distros will be in the format of a CD/DVD image file, such as .iso, .daa, .nrg, or .uif. After downlowding the image file, you can use just about any burning software to put the contents onto a blank disc.
After you have the disc created, you can use it to install linux on your machine. You shouldn't install linux on the same hard drive that you have an existing operating system on without help from an advanced user, because you may accidentally corrupt or remove the existing operating system.
Also, keep in mind that if you format or re-partition a hard drive you will lose all the data that is on it. So backup anything you may need before continuing.
Good Luck!

It sounds like you are a beginner so the best option for you is a distro called Ubuntu, which is very easy to instal and use. there is also Linspire which isn't free but probably the easiest to get used too as a window's user.
Linspire $49
http://www.linspire.com/
Ubuntu Free

there is always help and support on how to install and use and FAQ's on how it works
i recommend using a Live CD of ubuntu which boots up from a CD and does not change your hard disk in any way. then you can get used to it.
