Some people are very judgmental about some types of questions. When young people come here and type in their homework questions, some people feel it's a form of cheating and will answer with "Do your own homework."

Personally, I don't feel that the reason for asking a question should factor into whether or not I answer it. Whether you are asking out of personal curiosity or because you need help with homework is none of my business. Or anyone else's. What does concern anyone here is that there's a question that needs a valid answer. Period.

By the way, "do your own homework" is not an valid answer to a question. Since this is Yahoo! Answers, it's important that an answer is, well, an answer! A non-answer like that is against the rules that can and should be reported.

Edit: thisisme is entitled to her opinion. I stand by mine. As there is nothing in the Yahoo! Answers TOS against giving homework help (in fact, there's even a subsection called "Homework Help" under Education & Reference,) I see nothing wrong with users complying in a fashion that is comfortable for them. For instance, I have no qualms about helping a student out with one or two small questions that have happened to stump them. It happens to the best of us. I will not, however, write an entire term paper. (In those cases, I just skip the question. Writing "Do your own homework" is rude. Sorry.) I will give pointers and even provide helpful links, but no more than that. It is no different than going to the library and asking a volunteer tutor for help.

Calling students who ask for help 'lazy' is a judgment call that no one is qualified to make about a complete stranger.

Incidentally, the whole "in the real world, you can't get other people to do your work or help you" argument is flawed. In the real world, there are people who get others to do their work for them all the time and prosper abundantly. They're usually called 'managers.' The sooner you learn to network, the sooner you learn to get along in the real world.

It's called Yahoo Answers, not Yahoo homework help. If you are having a hard time figuring out one answer and have *really* tried on your own, then ask.
I've seen too many people get on here and show you a list of their entire homework asking for someone else to do it, and then they'll have the nerve to say "show your work". Or another one that is annoying is...I have a report due on whatever topic and I need it turned in by tomorrow, needs to be 100 words, please help!
Education is a gift and should be appreciated. If someone does your work for you what have you learned? Nada.
These "crap" givers are just preparing you for the real world. Take it kindly, it's advice, and that's what Yahoo answers is about.

When somebody asks a bunch of homework questions they obviously haven't tried to get themselves, I just give really, really bad answers that sound right if you don't read them very closely. I figure if they use it and turn it in as their own work, then it's fair that they get a grade that reflects the effort they put into it.

Here's an example of my answer to a kid that posted about 10 questions, a few under different names but clearly the same person:

Q: "What is the hydrologic cycle and various reservoirs of water?
please also describe the movements of water between reservoirs/percentage of water in each reservoir"

A: "The hydrologic cycle is the circulation of water from an aquifer to the clouds and back to the ground as rain, then down rivers to an aquifer again. The movement from the aquifer resivoirs to the cloud resivoirs is through evaporation, from the cloud resivoirs to the river resivoirs is through condisation, and the river resivoirs to the ocean aquifers is through gravity. The ocean aquifers has 75 % of the water, the cloud aquifers has 18% of the water, the well aquifers has 22% of the water and the river aquifers has 15% of the water."

MOST of the people who ask for homework help have not done or have any intention of doing their own work...so we get aggravated. We have no way of knowing whether it is yours or not, believe or not, the students who refuse to do their work and ask us to do it sometimes tell lies.
Soooo....take your own advice!
Thanks for listening.
EDIT: Avie-You're totally wrong re: homework help. You and anyone else who does the assignment for the kids who are too lazy to do it themselves does the kid(s) no favors and when they go out into the real world no one will be there to do their work for them then, might as well start depending on themselves now and do their own work. Help means exactly that; help as opposed to doing all the work. Wrong message, wrong mindset.
I am astounded that anyone could possibly think that doing someone else's homework for them, the total work, is the right thing to do. Wow.

Because you learn to put up with it, ignoring people is a wonderful skill. I also hate that, people answer without answering the question like 'what a stupid question' or 'you answered your own question' or 'how should i know?' WHY ARE THEY ANSWERING AT ALL?! Oh well, let's ignore them.
