There is a difference between being honest, and those white lies. For instance, someone may be very overweight, but, it is not necessary to tell them so. If the lie can save someone some dignity, and spare embarrassing answers then it is more than acceptable.

I think most so called white lies are for the benefit of not hurting someone else's feelings. As in "Do I look fat in this? White Lie: No honey, you look great!
If someone asks you a personal question that you are offended by you can avoid telling a lie, and tell the person that you are not comfortable answering that question, or tell them that you find the question to be inappropriate.

I think nearly everyone has done this from time to time, but if you want to speak bibilically, a lie is a lie. The rules are more black and white for G-d than for the rest of us.

i usually say it is a long story and I dont want to talk about it so I dont have to answer and i dont have to lie. if im trapped i will lie to protect myself ; like if family presures me and keeps asking and i feel threateened
