Think about what happens when you drop an egg from 4 feet. The impact of the non-flexible eggshell on the immovable object, (the floor,) causes the egg to shatter. The goal is to provide the egg with shock absorbers and direct the impact AWAY from the eggshell.
What do you have at home that will either flex enough to absorb the shock or that will collapse enough to absorb the shock? Too, how can you cradle the egg enough to allow the other materials to do their job without the egg coming out of your contraption and breaking on the bounce? There are a gazillion ways to do this, just look around your home and see what you have on hand.
Water balloons? Pasteboard folded accordian style? Foam peanuts? Shredded paper? A folded terry washcloth? Hope this helps get you started. The exercise isn't about keeping the egg intact, it's about making you analyze the problem and design a solution.

An egg is actually one of the strongest structures.. Test it out.. put an egg is a plastic baggy and put your hand around it and apply an equal force all around and squeeze as hard as you can-- you wont break it.. Use things like straws, cotton, popsicle sticks, and other normal things.. Heres a tip-- make sure the force doesn't hit it direct on-- use the popsicle sticks then the straws then cotton to make it bounce back a little.. Good Luck!

Holy crap, not only are these projects ALREADY answered but you are given basically the minimum required supplies to do this in pretty much one design. my way wrap the balloon around the egg. tape it off, place in foam block. stick foam block together using straws placed at 45° angle around edges. and if it fails "OMG you broke an egg", it's not the end of the world. learn something from it and move on with your life because you're not going to succeed in everything you do.

Fossilize it first.
I have always wanted to suspend one with springs in a box. That way I would think you could absorb the fall. But the egg would have to be in a container in the middle of the suspension.

Haha did this in 6th grade. Cut the right shape out of two blocks of styrofoam, then place the egg in the cut-out space, then tape the blocks together. Wrap the whole thing in cotton many times, then duct tape (semi-loosely. Not super tight, because then it won't help). Use more cotton if you want.

Put it in an egg carton full of cotton balls and tie the handles of a plastic bag to it. Instant parachute!

Boil it first or pack it in bubble wrap, an inner box, more bubble wrap and an outer box. That is how I keep the US Post Office from breaking crystal.
