Well, if you're a leper then so are we! The recent law about not smoking and driving is just mad! Tc hasn't smoked a ciggie whilst driving since it started but we've seen plenty of people who have....knowing our luck the first timeTc has a cig n he's driving he'll get nabbed which is why he won't do it! If cigs were THAT bad then the Government would ban them altogether and have tobacco products put onto the same list as cannabis and other drugs but they haven't so until they do we will continue to smoke because its our choice the same as it is your choice. We smoke mostly handrolling tobacco which according to our GP is a healthier option to the shop bought ones. There are hundreds of people who have stopped smoking but are now addicted to nicotine patches, gum etc., which we think is very funny! If you enjoy a cig then carry on enjoying them. We've been told (same GP) that they are more concerned with people who smoke and drink alcohol so we're ok coz we're tee-total! If, in general, your health is good and you don't suffer from any serious chest problems then why worry?! As for the big "C" we know people who have died from it who have never smoked in their lives. You've got more chance of getting lung cancer from diesel fumes than you do from smoking.....as long as you don't smoke 100+ a day that is. We've cut down but we won't be able to stop until all the hype about it goes away. Just enjoy them! And stop feeling like a leper.

I'm not exactly sure how to answer this question. Are you saying that you are some how involved in the tobacco industry? In any case you are right it is a matter of choice. You have chosen how you want to die. However, if you should change your mind you would be almost powerless to free yourself from the substance you have come to "enjoy". That is addiction.

Do you feel like a leper because your habit is now socially inappropriate? Smoking is now prohibited in public places, hotels and many landlords will not rent to a smoker. That does put you in a tough situation. You are now not allowed to partake in the substance you have chosen and come to enjoy to the point that you are dependent on it.

That your addiction is voluntary doesn't make it less of an addiction.

But that's not your real question. You want to know why you're getting treated like **** for being a smoker. I have two answers for you.

1) Those of us who are not smokers don't wish to be subjected to your secondhand smoke. You've heard this before. You probably think this answer is "whiny."

So how about a dollars and cents answer ...

2) Your employer pays a LOT of money for your health insurance. Health insurers pay a lot of money towards smoking-related illnesses. They're finally realizing that it's cheaper to prevent these illnesses than to treat them. So they're offering your employer big discounts on insurance premiums if they'll take the office smoke-free.

Plus your employer loses less employee productive time to smoke breaks.

Addiction is about being able to quit without side effects of withdrawal or psychological dependence. Your argument that it is not addicting because you want to smoke is just that a smoke screen. The same as an alcoholic saying he is not an alcoholic because he chooses to drink. If you truly believe they are not addicting then stop smoking cold turkey and remain off of them for 1 years time. Lets see if it is as easy for you to CHOOSE not to smoke.

If you desire to smoke fine... as long as it affects only you, have at it. Just remember the whole health care system is supporting your habit too with additional costs to keep you alive when they could be avoided. So if you are to the point of needing Oxygen and nebulizer compressor treatments because it feels like you are suffocating due to emphysema or in need of a cardiac bypass.... make sure you make the same argument.... "NO THANK YOU, it was my desire to smoke so I will refuse any additional treatments because of my poor choices."

It sounds like the only one you are really trying to convince is yourself. Ignorance is bliss.

It was my choice too in a time when many still smoked in public. The problem was I fell ill around the stomach when the smoking chemicals made my body too weak to fight off the different infections. Close to death I chose to stay alive and asked god to help me. Well it is eleven years ago but my good health was broken.

Mate, i hope this helps, yes it will kill you eventually so stop, i wish i could. It's to late for my mom because she has Lung Disease through smoking, and it's a matter of time before.. So i know smoking gives you pleasure as it does with every smoker. But at the end of the day it's your choice and i'm a smoker myself so i can't really moan. But i not long lost my uncle to Lung Cancer and since he passed away i smoked more, before he passed away i was going to quit but the upset brought on me smoking more fags, Mate try and stop! Matt

Stop making excuses. We are all embarrassed about our addictions.

I gave up over a year ago but I still miss it...I hate those 'gloaters' who criticise their former colleagues who are still smoking.

You are right my friend...it is your choice. Maybe the proper response to that statement is 'Yes...and it always will be!'

Anyway....non smokers have a price to repay the rest of us...boring and whiny!...

no. it is not the same. tobacco contain another substance that cause addiction called nicotine. and nicotine cannot be found in coffee. but amazingly, you can still found anti-oxidants in coffee which in turn makes coffee a not-so-bad drink.

Smokers are just plain not bright, face it. You are also a burden on society. And you all smell foul, you make a mess everywhere you go and you are stanking up the air. STOP.
