My daughter was recently let out of the hospital for being suicidal. I don't know how to deal with this. I'm watching her every moment and when I let her go to the bathroom she tried to drown herself in the bathtub. I don't feel she was ready to leave the hospital, but my health ensurance company decided that she can't be covered anymore.
What can I do? My daughter has tried to kill herself at least 3 more times! They said she was a disaster at the hospital. Why did they let her out after only a few days then?
I'm so worried. I've taken off work for a few weeks and my husband is working half days so he can be home, too.
I have to stay up all night by my daughter. I can't get ANY more than 4 hours of sleep and I have to follow my daughter to the bathroom!!
What can I do to get her back in the hospital?

Maybe you could ask if your insurance will pay for intensive outpatient or day treatment. This involves 5 days a week for about six hours/day. She obviously still needs intensive therapy, which it doesn't sound like she's getting. It is unfortunate that insurance companies don't really take patient needs in to account too much anymore. Talk to the Social Worker where she was hospitalized, you should be able to get some direction from her/him.

that child needs to be in hospital and if your insurance won't cover it then you and your husband will have to find a way to pay for it your selves. I have studied psychology and i know that this child needs to be hospitalized again because she shouldn't be attempting suicide within days of coming out of the hospital there is something wrong. So you need to either get it sorted with the insurance or pay out of your pocket for your child. You need to go back to the hospital and tell them what you just told us and they will definitely see a cause for concern and if they don't then you need to take her somewhere else until someone listens. I wish you all the best and i hope your daughter realises that she has alot to live for

Obviously your daughter wasn't better. You should have had her re-admitted after every attempt she made since coming home. You should also call your insurance company. I've never heard of an insurance company not paying for mental health, or claiming to not pay more than a two day stay.

Ryan's mom, you are quite wrong. Insurance won't always pay for it.
Hun, when I was younger I tried to kill myself as well. My mom had put me in the mental hospital once (For 6 days) and then I started getting suicidal again. I was put in the mental hospital again for only 6 days, again. But, my insurance (Say situation) wouldn't cover me any longer. The doctor I had at the hospital told my mother to put me in long term residental. I was put in Boys & Girls Town of Missouri (I live in Missouri). I was in there for 6 months & it really helped. You did not leave. You stayed there for 6 months straight but, if you we're good they let you go on home passes for the weekend or speacil holidays. But, I would check into long term residental. Some stay for a year or longer. Yes, it would be hard but, it's what your daugter needs. Trust me, it's a good things & it works SOO well. I didn't like being in there but, it wasn't so bad where it was unliveable. I made it through the longest 6 months of my life & I won't ever go back.
Good-Luck, hun & stay strong.

They kicked her out of the hospital after only 2 days? I find that kind of hard to believe. You posted your last question just 2 days ago stating that you had only taken her that morning. They usually keep them for at least a week. The doctors can force the insurance company to prolong treatment if necessary.

I have 3 teenage daughters. I couldn't imagine one of them trying to take their life. I would do whatever it took to get her help. I would sale everything I own if that is what it took. Have you tried contacting the state mental hospital in the state you live? Also have you called the police when she has attempted to take her life? In most states they will take her into custody and put a suicide watch on her. If she tries it while in custody, they will have her committed for at least 36hrs. I really feel for you, but you gave birth to her and now is not the time to let your emotions make your decisions. You have to be tough, and it is your responsibility to make sure she is safe at all costs. Even if that means having her arrested. Believe me when she gets her head straight she will thank you for it.

I dont know if you have it in your state but I know that in my state you can have yourself (or your child) commited into a mental health clinic and they will monitor her for 30 days. That should be the best way to get the insurance to pay for it. If not I would look into getting her on either state insurance or have her become a ward of the state. That isnt the best but it is a way to have her checked in.

your doctor can say she needs a longer stay and you just keep calling the insurance company and telling them that she needs more care and call other mental health professionals to see what can be done

Quite frankly, I don't care if you have to remortgage your house, you have to get her proper care. If she's already tried to kill herself since she got home, get her help NOW. Take her to a different hospital if you need to, as the previous one obviously didn't recognize how much danger she's in.
